Scripture

2Ki 20:14-15 NLT Then Isaiah the prophet went to King Hezekiah and asked him, “What did those men want? Where were they from?” Hezekiah replied, “They came from the distant land of Babylon.” 15 “What did they see in your palace?” Isaiah asked. “They saw everything,” Hezekiah replied. “I showed them everything I own—all my royal treasuries.”

Observation

The Lord has done so much for Hezekiah, miraculously delivered him from the Assyrians, God miraculously healed him and gave him 15 extra years, and also gives him a miraculous sign with the shadow on the sundial going back 10 degrees. The Lord also evidently blessed Hezekiah and restored much of his wealth to the point that he became proud and secure in his blessed life.  The Babylonian King heard of all the great things that God had done from Hezekiah and even sent a delegation with gifts in honor of Hezekiah’s healing and restoration.  Hezekiah proudly showed off the glory and wealth of his nation to the Babylonian delegation. This is where Isaiah the prophet chastises Hezekiah for his foolish pride.  He gives Hezekiah of prophetic warning of what was to come: “’Behold, the days are coming when all that is in your house, and what your fathers have accumulated until this day, shall be carried to Babylon; nothing shall be left,’ says the LORD. ‘And they shall take away some of your sons who will descend from you, whom you will beget; and they shall be eunuchs in the palace of the king of Babylon.’†(v.17-8 NLT) This is exactly what happened (see 2Kings 24:13; 25:13-15; Dan 1:3-7). Sadly, Hezekiah’s response was not one of repentance and humbling himself before the Lord.  Rather he was only concerned about himself and his prosperity and said, “The word of the LORD which you have spoken is good!” For he said, “Will there not be peace and truth at least in my days?” (v.19 NLT). “Pride goes before destruction, and haughtiness before a fall.†(Pro 16:18 NLT).  “And those who are rich should boast that God has humbled them. They will fade away like a little flower in the field. The hot sun rises and the grass withers; the little flower droops and falls, and its beauty fades away. In the same way, the rich will fade away with all of their achievements.†(Jam 1:10-11 NLT) Be careful of sowing seed of failure in our times of success and blessing.

How does this apply to you?
