Scripture

2Ki 21:1,2,9 NIV84  Manasseh was twelve years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem fifty-five years. His mother’s name was Hephzibah. 2 He did evil in the eyes of the LORD, following the detestable practices of the nations the LORD had driven out before the Israelites. 9 …Manasseh led them astray, so that they did more evil than the nations the LORD had destroyed before the Israelites.

Observation

We wonder how Manasseh could have gone so wrong after Hezekiah his father had led Judah back to serving the Lord.  And yet evidently although Hezekiah served the Lord God of Israel, yet there were areas which he did not submit to the Lord God.  When warned that Babylon would invade, destroy and carry off everything that he and the Jews held precious, his attitude was, “At least there will be peace and security during my lifetime.†(20:19 NLT) God had given Hezekiah 15 extra years to live.  This should have been a time that he prepared the nation and the next generation to continue to serve the Lord and walk in his ways. God had promised, “If the Israelites will be careful to obey My commands—all the laws My servant Moses gave them—I will not send them into exile from this land that I gave their ancestors.” 9 But the people refused to listen.†(v.8-9 NLT; see also Lev 26:3-13; Deut. 28:1-14 etc.).  Manasseh was born during these years of grace that God had given Hezekiah, but he failed to use the time wisely and teach his son the ways of the Lord.  Proverbs gives the example of what we are to teach our children. “My child, never forget the things I have taught you. Store my commands in your heart. 2 If you do this, you will live many years, and your life will be satisfying. 5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding.  6 Seek His will in all you do, and He will show you which path to take. 7 Don’t be impressed with your own wisdom. Instead, fear the LORD and turn away from evil.†(Pro 3:1-2,5-7 NLT; see also Deut. 6:3-9)
How does this apply to you?
