Scripture
2Ki 23:25-26 NIV84 Neither before nor after Josiah was there a king like him who turned to the LORD as he did—with all his heart and with all his soul and with all his strength, in accordance with all the Law of Moses. 26 Nevertheless, the LORD did not turn away from the heat of his fierce anger, which burned against Judah because of all that Manasseh had done to provoke him to anger.
Observation
Josiah was a great and godly king. He did so much that was good and right. He restored the Temple of the Lord in Jerusalem. He renews the covenant of the Lord. He removes many of the idols and pagan practices that had taken root in Judah. Then he gathered all of the people to celebrate the Passover in Jerusalem. It is recorded, “Not since the days of the judges who led Israel, nor throughout the days of the kings of Israel and the kings of Judah, had any such Passover been observed.†(v.22 NIV84). But in spite of all the good that he has done, there is a root in the people and in society that is still hanging on to the ways idolatry and rebellion against the Lord. Though the outward forms of idolatry had been removed, there was something still remaining in the heart of the people that immediately surfaced after Josiah dies, and they return to idolatry in the days of Josiah’s sons, until God fulfills his promise to destroy and remove them from the Land of promise. It is during the reign of Josiah that the prophet Jeremiah begins to prophesy to Judah and he accuses them of making a show of worshiping the Lord on the external but hanging on to their idols and wicked ways on the inside. Though our external actions are important, it is what is in the heart that God sees and desires to change and transform. “The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?  “I the LORD search the heart and examine the mind, to reward a man according to his conduct, according to what his deeds deserve.”†(Jer 17:9-10 NIV84). Jesus said, “For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander. These are what make a man ‘unclean’; but eating with unwashed hands does not make him “unclean.'” (Matt 15:19-20 NIV84). Here is what the Lord really desires, “Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual act of worship. 2 Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.†(Rom 12:1-2 NIV84)
