Scripture

2Ki 24:3-4 NIV84  Surely these things happened to Judah according to the LORD’s command, in order to remove them from his presence because of the sins of Manasseh and all he had done, 4 including the shedding of innocent blood. For he had filled Jerusalem with innocent blood, and the LORD was not willing to forgive.

Observation

This is a very sobering and challenging passage.  It should cause us to wake up and reassess our lives.  Some things we need to remember.  First God is a just and righteous God.  He will judge with perfect justice.  But God is also a good and gracious God.  Whatever he does and allows is for our ultimate good, even discipline.  He will work everything together for our good according to his plan and purpose.  Part of God’s justice is revealed in the law of sowing and reaping. “Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. 8 The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature will reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life.†(Gal 6:7-8 NIV84).  Even when we repent and return to the Lord, which we should always do no matter what we have done or where we are, seed of wickedness and sin will always have their fruit (see Manasseh repentance 2Chro 33:12-13; also see David’s life). Sometimes we think that when we repent, God wipes out all of our sin and even its consequences.  This is simply not true. David repented of his sins and returned to God (see Psa 51).  This put him in right relationship with God and he was even called a man after God’s own heart.  But the fact of the matter is he still reaped the consequences of his sin in much pain and disfunction in his family.  It also sowed seeds of sin in his children, including Solomon who eventually even built altars to worship many foreign gods (1Kings 11:2,4,10 etc.).  But we must never forget 1John 1:9 “But if we confess our sins to Him, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.†(NLT).  God’s purpose of his goodness is not to make everything easy but to bring us into right relationship with him and his purposes.
How does this apply to you?
