Scripture
1Th 2:4 On the contrary, we speak as men approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel. We are not trying to please men but God, who tests our hearts.

Observation
What is our motive for serving God and how are we examined? Paul first acknowledges that he has been entrusted with the gospel, a great treasure, which he considers himself a steward. Jesus often spoke about the faithful servant who was placed in charge of all of his master’s goods. This is a picture of all of us and everything God has entrusted to us, but especially the great treasure of the gospel. Because it is such Good News, some have used it to enrich themselves and gain position and authority by it. Paul on the other hand says, that the only motive for preaching the Gospel is to gain the approval and pleasure of God, the Father. This was David’s heart also (see David’s prayer 1Chro 29:10-18). David prayed this prayer repeatedly through the Psalms, “Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. 24 See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.†Psa 139:23-24 NIV84). Jeremiah says it this way, “The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it? 10 “I the LORD search the heart and examine the mind, to reward a man according to his conduct, according to what his deeds deserve.” (Jer 17:9-10 NIV84). Here is what God says about testing us, “I will refine them like silver and test them like gold. They will call on my name and I will answer them; I will say, ‘They are my people,’ and they will say, ‘The LORD is our God.'” (Zech 13:9 NIV84; see also Isa 48:10; Mal 3:2-3; 1Pet 1:6-7). How’s your gold doing?
How does this apply to you?
