Scripture
1Th 2:13 NIV84 And we also thank God continually because, when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men, but as it actually is, the word of God, which is at work in you who believe.
Observation
There are many ways to respond to the preaching of the Word of God. Paul says those who believed in Thessalonica (some Jews but mostly Greeks and Gentiles; see Acts 17:4) heard the word and readily accepted it as the word of God. When we hear the word, accept and believe it, it works in us to accomplish God’s will and purpose. This is good. But there were Jews in Thessalonica who outright rejected the word of God preached by Paul, simply because it did not align with how they interpreted Scripture (see Acts 17:5), and they drove Paul and Silas from their town. Paul then went to a neighboring city called Berea where he again preached the message of Jesus Christ from the Scriptures. The people of Berea though had another response: “And the people of Berea were more open-minded than those in Thessalonica, and they listened eagerly to Paul’s message. They searched the Scriptures day after day to see if Paul and Silas were teaching the truth. As a result, many Jews believed, as did many of the prominent Greek women and men.†(Acts 17:11-12 NLT). We are told that the people of Berea were “better disposed and more noble than those in Thessalonica, for they were entirely ready and accepted and welcomed the message†(AMP). It is good to hear, accept and respond with faith to the word of God that is spoken. It is not good to reject something just because it doesn’t agree with how you see Scripture. The best response is to search the Scriptures for yourself and see whether it is true or not (see also John 5:39; 2Tim 3:15-17; 2Tim 2:15)(Also read Psa 19:7-11).
