１テサロニケ 4:1（新改訳JSS2017）　最後に兄弟たち。主イエスにあってお願いし、また勧めます。あなたがたは、神に喜ばれるためにどのように歩むべきかを私たちから学び、現にそう歩んでいるのですから、ますますそうしてください。

パウロはここで敬虔に、霊的に生きるための実践的なことを教えています。いかに私たちの日常生活で神を喜ばせることができるか。まず、私たちは聖なる者（きよく、正しく生きる者）となり、特に性的淫らな生き方、不品行を避けることです（2-3節）。そのかぎは自分の体を制御し、きよく生きてふるまうことによって、品位ある生活をするのです。しかし、これは自己鍛錬だけではなく、聖霊の助けと力によって生きることです（8節）。でも、これはただしてはならないことだけではなく、積極的に互いを神の愛で愛することなのです（9節）。パウロはもう一つ神を喜ばせることをあげてます。落ち着いた生活を送りながら生産的であることです。「また、私たちが命じたように、落ち着いた生活をし、自分の仕事に励み、自分の手で働くことを名誉としなさい。外の人々に対して品位をもって歩み、だれの世話にもならずに生活するためです」（11-12節 JSS2017; ２テサロニケ 3:12-13も参照）。パウロはコロサイの信者たちにも同じようなことを言っています。「外部の人たちに対しては、機会を十分に活かし、知恵をもって行動しなさい。あなたがたのことばが、いつも親切で、塩味の効いたものであるようにしなさい。そうすれば、一人ひとりにどのように答えたらよいかが分かります」（コロサイ 4:5-6 JSS2017; １テモテ2:1-4も参照）。そしてこれらのことをますます行うようにと勧めています。これらの究極的目的は神を愛し、人を愛するということですが、神を喜ばせるためです。キリスト者として生きるということは、私たちの日常生活をすべて影響すべきことです。

1Th 4:1 NIV84 Finally, brothers, we instructed you how to live in order to please God, as in fact you are living. Now we ask you and urge you in the Lord Jesus to do this more and more.

Observation

Paul now gives some practical instructions on how to live a godly life, the goal of which is to please God.  First, be sanctified (live and walk in holiness) by not avoiding sexual immorality (v. 2). The key is to “learn to control his own body in a way that is holy and honorable.” (v.4). But it is not just by our self-discipline but by the power of the Holy Spirit (v.8). It is not just about what not to do but by proactively loving one another with God’s love (v.9). Another way to live to please God is to live peaceful and quite lives but to be work productively with our hands.  “Make it your goal to live a quiet life, minding your own business and working with your hands, just as we instructed you before. Then people who are not Christians will respect the way you live, and you will not need to depend on others.” (v.11-12; see also 2 Thes 3:12-13). Paul encourages us to do this “more and more.”    Paul tells the Colossians the same thing.  “Walk in wisdom toward outsiders, making the best use of the time. Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.” (Col 4:5-6 ESV; see 1Tim 2:1-4 also). The ultimate goal in loving God and loving people is to please God (see Matt 22:37-40; Mic 6:8 etc.). Living as a Christ-follower should affect every part of our lives including our daily lives.
