ネヘミヤ 4:16-17 （新改訳JSS2017）　その日以来、私の配下の若い者の半分は工事を続け、もう半分は、槍、盾、弓、よろいで身を固めていた。隊長たちがユダの全家を守った。城壁を築く者たち、荷を担いで運ぶ者たちは、片手で仕事をし、片手に投げ槍を握っていた。

コメント

ネヘミヤとユダヤ人は非常に危機的な時に居ました。しかし、彼らは働くのをやめませんでした。堅く立って、しっかりと見張りをしまして、常に、武器を手に持ちながらも働きました。「水場でもそれぞれ投げやりを持って行った」（23節 JSS2017）。同じように、私たちも勧められています。「最大の敵である悪魔の攻撃に備えて、警戒しなさい。悪魔は、飢えてほえたけるライオンのように、引き裂くべき獲物を求めてうろつき回っているのです。 9信仰に堅く立って、悪魔の攻撃に立ち向かいなさい」（１ペテロ 5:8-9　JCB）。パウロも言っています。「最後に、覚えておいてほしいことがあります。あなたがたは、自分のうちにある主の全能の力によって強められるようにしてください。 11悪魔のどんな策略にも立ち向かえるように、神のすべての武具で身をかためなさい」（エペソ6:10-11 JCB）。ユダヤ人は盾とよろいで身をかためて働きました。私たちも信仰の大盾と義の胸当てを取るように教えられています。信仰とは主なる神に対する信頼と神のことばに対する確信です。私たちの義は神ご自身が与えてくださる（成してくださった）完全な救いのみわざです。これらは私たちの心と内なるものを守るのです。私たちの唯一の攻撃の武器は御霊の剣、神のことばです（エペソ6:17参照）。パウロはまたテサロニケの人たちにも言いました。「私たちは昼の者なので、信仰と愛の胸当てを着け、救いの望みというかぶとをかぶり、身を慎んでいましょう」（１テサロニケ 5:8　JSS2017）。目を覚まし、堅く立って、神が備えてくださった武具をもって身をかためましょう。

Neh 4:16-17 NLT  But from then on, only half my men worked while the other half stood guard with spears, shields, bows, and coats of mail. The leaders stationed themselves behind the people of Judah 17 who were building the wall. The laborers carried on their work with one hand supporting their load and one hand holding a weapon.

Observation

Nehemiah and the Jews were living in very perilous times, but they did not stop working, the just doubled down in vigilance and stood their ground.  They also always kept their weapons with them at all times not matter what they did, “We carried our weapons with us at all times, even when we went for water.” (v.23 NLT).  In the say way we are admonished to, “Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour. Stand firm against him, and be strong in your faith. Remember that your Christian brothers and sisters all over the world are going through the same kind of suffering you are.” (1Pet 5:8-9 NLT)  Paul tells us, “A final word: Be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power. Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil.” (Eph 6:10-11 NLT) The defensive weapons the Jew in Nehemiah’s day worked with were their shields and coats of mail. So we are to take the shield of faith and the breastplate of righteousness. Faith in God and his word will protect us from the fiery darts of the enemy;  also our righteousness by faith (total trust in what God has already done for us) will guard our hearts and inner soul.  Our only offensive weapon is the Sword of the Spirit which is the Word of God (see v.17) Paul again tells the Thessalonians, “But let us who live in the light be clearheaded, protected by the armor of faith and love, and wearing as our helmet the confidence of our salvation.” (1Thes 5:8 NLT).  Let us stand alert and strong and put on the armor that God has provided for us.
