ネヘミヤ 5:19（リビングバイブル JCB）　神様、この民に対して私のしたことをお心に留め、私を祝福してください。

ネヘミヤはペルシャ宮廷における非常に重大な役職を後にして、エルサレムの町の復興のために身をささげました（ネヘミヤ1-2 参照）。外部からも、ときには内部からも反対され迫害されましたが、決して神が心に与えた夢と目的をあきらめませんでした。大きな犠牲をも払いながら、この働きと自分に仕えている部下たちのために自分の経済や努力を用いました。その行政を支え、彼らの食費まで備えました。また、自分にまかせられていた、税金取り立ての権利も、民の負担にならないように放棄しました（14-17節参照）。私たちは自分たちの良い働きによって神に受け入れられたり、救われたりはしません。しかし、神によって贖われ、救われたのは良い働きをするためです。「実に、私たちは神の作品であって、良い行いをするためにキリスト・イエスにあって造られたのです。神は、私たちが良い行いに歩むように、その良い行いをあらかじめ備えてくださいました」（エペソ 2:10 JSS2017）。「神はあなたがたに、あらゆる恵みをあふれるばかりに与えることがおできになります。あなたがたが、いつもすべてのことに満ち足りて、すべての良いわざにあふれるようになるためです」（２コリント 9:8 JSS2017; 6:18;１テモテ6:8； ２テモテ 2:21; 3:17; テトス 2:4; 3:1,8,14なども参照）。その目的は人々の間で神が崇められルためです。「あらゆる良いものをもって、あなたがたを整え、みこころを行わせてくださいますように。また、御前でみこころにかなうことを、イエス・キリストを通して、私たちのうちに行ってくださいますように。栄光が世々限りなくイエス・キリストにありますように。アーメン」（へブル 13:21 JSS2017）。イエス様はこのように言いました。「このように、あなたがたの光を人々の前で輝かせなさい。人々があなたがたの良い行いを見て、天におられるあなたがたの父をあがめるようになるためです」（マタイ 5:16 JSS2017）。私たちは良いわざを行うために造られ、贖われたことを忘れてはなりません。

Observation

Nehemiah gave up a very important position in the Persian court to come to Jerusalem and work to restore the city(see Neh 1).  Even though there was much opposition from without and sometimes from within, he never gave up working to accomplish the goal God had put in his heart. He also sacrificed much by providing for the officials who worked with him and for him.  He chose not to use the right of taxation to support his cause but rather paid out of his own finances to feed and maintain his administration (see v.14-17).  Although we are not accepted or saved by our works, we are saved and redeemed by God so that we can do good works. “For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” (Eph 2:10 NIV84)  “And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.” (2Cor 9:8 NIV84; see also 1 Tim 6:18; 2Tim 2:21; 3:17; Tit 2:4; 3:1,8,14). The purpose is that God would be glorified among all people. “…Equip you with everything good for doing his will, and may he work in us what is pleasing to him, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.” (Heb 13:21 NIV84).  Jesus said it this way, “In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.” (Matt 5:16 NIV84).  Let’s always remember that we are “created…to do good works.”
