Scripture

Neh 8:10-11 NLT  And Nehemiah continued, “Go and celebrate with a feast of rich foods and sweet drinks, and share gifts of food with people who have nothing prepared. This is a sacred day before our Lord. Don’t be dejected and sad, for the joy of the LORD is your strength!” 11 And the Levites, too, quieted the people, telling them, “Hush! Don’t weep! For this is a sacred day.”

Observation

The walls of Jerusalem have been rebuilt, but there is still much restoration that needs to be done.  “The first day of the seventh month† (v.2) was the beginning of the New Year (civil calendar 民事ã®æš¦) and was celebrated by the blowing of trumpets (Feast of Trumpets).  Nehemiah, Ezra, and the leaders of Judah gathered the people together to hear the reading of the Law (Pentateuch).  Many of the younger generation could not understand the old Hebrew and so different ones explained (translated) it into  language they could understand (v.8).  When the people heard the reading of the Law and understood, they began to weep, knowing they had fallen far from God’s commands and Laws.  However, on this day Nehemiah, Ezra and the leaders told the people this is not a day of grief and mourning (of course there is a time for repentance and weeping) but this day was to be one of celebration and rejoicing in God’s goodness and the new beginning which they were now experiencing.  “This is a sacred day before our Lord. Don’t be dejected and sad, for the joy of the LORD is your strength!”†(NLT).  The Lord is doing a new thing and we need to rejoice in what he is doing to restore us to the place we should be.  Joy and rejoicing in the Lord rejuvenates our strength. “Praise the LORD! For He has heard my cry for mercy. 7 The LORD is my strength and shield. I trust Him with all my heart. He helps me, and my heart is filled with joy. I burst out in songs of thanksgiving. 8 The LORD gives His people strength. He is a safe fortress for His anointed king. 9 Save Your people! Bless Israel, Your special possession. Lead them like a shepherd, and carry them in Your arms forever. (Psa 28:6-NLT)

How does this apply to you?
