ネヘミヤ 9:16-17（新改訳JSS2017）　しかし彼ら、私たちの先祖は　傲慢にふるまい、うなじを固くし、あなたの命令に聞き従いませんでした。17彼らは聞き従うことを拒み、彼らの間で行われた奇しいみわざを思い出さず、かえってうなじを固くし、かしらを立てて、逆らって奴隷の身に戻ろうとしました。それにもかかわらず、あなたは赦しの神であり、情け深く、あわれみ深く、怒るのに遅く、恵み豊かであられ、彼らをお捨てになりませんでした。

バビロン捕囚から戻ってこられた残りの者がみなエルサレムに集まり、モーセの律法を共に読み聞かせられて、ともに祝いました。彼らは天の神をほめたたえ、主が過去においても先祖たちのためになされたこと、そして、自分たちのためにもされたことを思い起こしました。そして自分たちと先祖たちが救い出してくださった神に対して罪をおかし、反抗してきたことを告白しました。主なる神は救い出してくださり、奇跡的に導てこられ、直接天から声をもって語り律法を与えられ、また、奇跡的にパンと水を備えてくださったにもかかわらず、彼らは「高慢で、頑固で、神様の戒めに耳を傾けようとはしませんでした。彼らは反抗的」でした。なんと恩知らず、感謝知らずの傲慢な者でしょう。それでも、主なる神は「赦してくださる神です。いつも人々を赦そうとしてくださり、恵みに富み、思いやり深く、すぐにお怒りになることのないお方です」（JCB）。しかし、最もおどろくのは「彼らをお捨てになりませんでした」（JSS2017）。「あなたは私たちの先祖をお見捨てにはなりませんでした」（JCB）。ここで彼らはイスラエルが神に逆らい、背を向けたときのモーセのとりなしの祈りを引用し、祈りました。「主は怒るのに遅く、恵み豊かであり、咎と背きを赦す。しかし、罰すべき者を必ず罰し、父の咎を子に報い、三代、四代に及ぼす』と。この民をエジプトから今に至るまで耐え忍んでくださったように、どうかこの民の咎をあなたの大きな恵みによって赦してください」（民数記 14:18-19 JSS2017）。私たちもこの反抗的の心に陥らないようにいつも気をつけましょう。

Neh 9:16-17 ESV  “But they and our fathers acted presumptuously and stiffened their neck and did not obey your commandments. 17 They refused to obey and were not mindful of the wonders that you performed among them, but they stiffened their neck and appointed a leader to return to their slavery in Egypt. But you are a God ready to forgive, gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, and did not forsake them.

Observation

All the remnant who returned from the Babylonian captivity had gathered in Jerusalem to read the Law of Moses, and to celebrate.  They praised the God of Heaven and remembered what He had done in the past with their ancestors and what He had done once again.  But they also remembered and confessed their sin and rebellion against God who had delivered them.  In spite of all that the Lord had done for them in delivering them, miraculously leading them through the wilderness, speaking directly to them and giving them the Law, and even miraculously providing bread and water for them, “they acted presumptuously and stiffened their neck.”  How arrogant and ungrateful!  And yet the Lord is, “a forgiving God, gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love.” (NIV84) But here is the most amazing thing, “Therefore you did not desert them.” (NIV84) “You did not abandon them.” (NLT) “You did not forsake them.” (AMP).  They are of course quoting and praying what the Moses prayed for the people when they rebelled against the Lord. “The LORD is slow to anger, abounding in love and forgiving sin and rebellion. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation.’ 19 In accordance with your great love, forgive the sin of these people, just as you have pardoned them from the time they left Egypt until now.”(Num 14:18-19 NIV84). Let’s be careful that we do not fall into the same rebellious attitude.
