Scripture
Neh 9:32-33 NLT “And now, our God, the great and mighty and awesome God, who keeps his covenant of unfailing love, do not let all the hardships we have suffered seem insignificant to You. Great trouble has come upon us and upon our kings and leaders and priests and prophets and ancestors—all of Your people—from the days when the kings of Assyria first triumphed over us until now. 33 Every time You punished us You were being just. We have sinned greatly, and You gave us only what we deserved.
Observation
The people of Judah together confess their sins and the sins of their ancestors. True repentance acknowledges not only our sin but the justice and righteousness of God, but also calls upon his mercy and grace. Daniel also prayed a prayer of repentance about the same time (see Dan 9:18-19).  David said, “He does not punish us for all our sins; He does not deal harshly with us, as we deserve.†(Psa 103:10 NLT). “LORD, if You kept a record of our sins, who, O Lord, could ever survive? 4 But You offer forgiveness, that we might learn to fear You.†(Psa 130:3-4 NLT) Paul tells us, “For God saved us and called us to live a holy life. He did this, not because we deserved it, but because that was His plan from before the beginning of time—to show us His grace through Christ Jesus.†(2Tim 1:9 NLT) The Apostle John challenges us, “If we claim we have no sin, we are only fooling ourselves and not living in the truth. 9 But if we confess our sins to Him, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness. 10 If we claim we have not sinned, we are calling God a liar and showing that His word has no place in our hearts.†(1John 1:8-10 NLT).
