Scripture

Neh 11:17 NLT Also Mattaniah son of Mica, son of Zabdi, a descendant of Asaph, who led in thanksgiving and prayer. Also Bakbukiah, who was Mattaniah’s assistant, and Abda son of Shammua, son of Galal, son of Jeduthun.

Observation

This section lists the various offices and roles of various ones working in and around the Temple.  It took many people to do all the work of the Temple.  In this verse is listed one man, Mattaniah, who is a descendant of Asaph (the worship leader during David’s reign and in the Tabernacle of David and the Temple of Solomon.)  His job was to lead the Temple Choir in Thanksgiving and Prayer.  Every morning and evening there were sacrifices offered at the temple (according to the instructions of Moses.)  Along with that at the same time there were prayers, Psalms, songs, thanksgiving that was offered up.  We are all priests (see 1Pet 2:5,9) who should offer up our thanksgiving and prayers daily (morning and evening), but there or people who have a special anointing and calling to lead in “thanksgiving and prayerâ€.  Here is what we are challenged to do as NT priest, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.†(Phil 4:6 NIV84).  And, “Be joyful always; 17 pray continually; 18 give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.†(1Thes 5:16-18 NIV84).  Though there are those who are called with a special ministry of prayer, praise, and thanksgiving, We need to each take this ministry seriously and offer prayers, praises, sing Psalms and songs, and give thanksgiving, every day, morning and evening (David went so far as to say, “I will praise you seven times a day…†Psa 119:164.) It will transform the atmosphere of your life, home and everywhere we go.

How does this apply to you?
