Scripture
Neh 12:1,8 ESV These are the priests and the Levites who came up with Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Jeshua: Seraiah, Jeremiah, Ezra… 8 And the Levites: Jeshua, Binnui, Kadmiel, Sherebiah, Judah, and Mattaniah, who with his brothers was in charge of the songs of thanksgiving.
Observation
Nehemiah lists the priest and Levites who cam back with Zerubbabel and others back to Jerusalem. They were the leaders of the Temple worship and also led songs of thanksgiving. As important as the Temple was, when Jesus came he told us, “But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. 24 God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” (John 4:23-24 ESV). How we worship (truth) is very important but the heart of worship (spirit) is also important. Singing has always played a part in worship to the Lord from the days of Moses and Miriam and the deliverance from Egypt (see Exo 15). But it was David who established worship in music and singing and incorporated it into the Tabernacle and then the Temple worship (see Psalms; 1Chro 25-26 etc.). Even Jesus and the disciples sang songs of worship (see Matt 26:30). You don’t even have to be in “church†to worship in song. Paul and Silas sang hymns in the prison (see Acts 16:25). And Paul taught repeatedly about the importance of singing and worship. “Singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, and making music to the Lord in your hearts. And give thanks for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.â€Â  (Eph 5:19-20 NLT; see also Col 3:16-17 etc.).  It is also one thing we will do for all eternity. “And they sang in a mighty chorus: “Worthy is the Lamb who was slaughtered—to receive power and riches and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and blessing.”  And then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea. They sang: “Blessing and honor and glory and power belong to the One sitting on the throne and to the Lamb forever and ever.” (Rev 5:12-13 NLT; see also Rev 15:13-14 etc.)
