ネヘミヤ 12:27, 30 （リビングバイブルJCB）　エルサレムの新しい城壁の奉献式の時には国中のレビ人がエルサレムに集まり、それぞれ感謝の歌を歌い、シンバルや十弦の琴や竪琴を鳴らして、喜ばしい式典を盛り上げました。30 祭司とレビ人は、まず自分自身をきよめ、次に、人々、門、城壁をきよめました。

城壁の再建の働きが完成し、お祝いの時となりました。しかし、彼らはまず自分たちと民をきよめ、また、城壁と門をきよめました。山上の垂訓の中でイエスは言いました。「心のきよい人は幸いです。そういう人は親しく神とお会いできるからです」（マタイ 5:8 JCB）。最も重要なのは何をしたかではなく、心がどうであるかです。この城壁と神殿は完成し、何百年も神の恵みといつくしみの証として立ちましたが、これらの物理的なものに感動すべきではありません。弟子たちはイエスに言いました。「この神殿は、たいそうりっぱですね」（マタイ24：1 JCB）。イエスは答えました。「今、あなたがたが目を見張っているこれらの建物は、一つの石もほかの石の上に残らないほど、あとかたもなく壊されてしまいます」（マタイ24：2 JCB）。 これ40年ほど後にそのとおり実現しました。 エルサレムの城壁も神殿も跡形もなく崩されました。神が求めておられるのは正しい、きよい心です。「神に近づきなさい。そうすれば、神も近づいてくださいます。罪ある人たちよ。罪の生活から足を洗いなさい。純粋で真実な心の持ち主だと認めてもらえるように、神への思いで心を満たしなさい」（ヤコブ 4：8 JCB）。 ダビデが大きく罪を犯した後、悔い改めて祈りました。「ああ神よ。どうか、きよい思いと正しい願いで満たされた、新しいきれいな心にしてください。11私を見捨てて、永久に御前から　追放してしまわれることがありませんように。聖霊を私から取り上げないでください。12救いの喜びを再び鮮やかにして、心からあなたに従おうとする思いに満たしてください」（詩篇 51:10-12 JCB;　マタイ23：16も参照）。

Neh 12:27,30 NIV84  At the dedication of the wall of Jerusalem, the Levites were sought out from where they lived and were brought to Jerusalem to celebrate joyfully the dedication with songs of thanksgiving and with the music of cymbals, harps and lyres. 30  When the priests and Levites had purified themselves ceremonially, they purified the people, the gates and the wall.

Observation

The work of rebuilding the wall is complete and now it is time to celebrate.  But the first thing they do is to purify themselves and the people, the gates and the wall.  Jesus said in the Sermon on the Mount, “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.” (Matt 5:8 NIV84).  The most important thing is not what we do but to have a clean and pure heart before the Lord God.  This wall and the Temple they had built was very impressive and stood for many hundreds of years as a testament to God’s love and care for his people, but it is not the wall and buildings that are to make an impression on us.  The disciples boasted to Jesus about them, “Jesus left the temple and was walking away when his disciples came up to him to call his attention to its buildings.” (Matt 24:1 NIV84).  Here is what Jesus responded, “Do you see all these things?” he asked. “I tell you the truth, not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be thrown down.” (Matt 24:2 NIV84).  This was literally fulfilled approximately 40 years later when the city of Jerusalem, walls and temple were utterly destroyed.  God is seeking purity and clean hearts.  “Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.” (Jam 4:8 NIV84).  David said, “Who may ascend the hill of the LORD? Who may stand in his holy place? 4 He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not lift up his soul to an idol or swear by what is false.” (Psa 24:3-4 NIV84).  After David sinned grievously before the Lord, he repented and prayed, “Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. 11 Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. 12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.”  (Psa 51:10-12 NIV84; see Matt 23:16 also).
