Scripture
Neh 13:1-2Â On that day the Book of Moses was read aloud in the hearing of the people and there it was found written that no Ammonite or Moabite should ever be admitted into the assembly of God, 2Â because they had not met the Israelites with food and water but had hired Balaam to call a curse down on them. (Our God, however, turned the curse into a blessing.)
Observation
The Lord is very clear about being careful who we associate with both in the OT and the NT. The Ammonites and Moabites were immoral and wicked people who constantly were opposed to God’s people and harassed and attacked them all through the OT. In Nehemiah, one of the main enemies of Judah was Tobiah, the Ammonite. And yet the High Priest Eliashib becomes very cozy with Tobiah and even gives him a room to use in the Temple (what is he thinking!?). As they are reading the Scriptures they hear that they are not to have anything to do with the Ammonites and Moabites. When Nehemiah finds out what has happened, he immediately throws Tobiah and all of his things out of the temple room (see v.7-8). The NT is also very clear about who we associate with. “You adulterous people, don’t you know that friendship with the world is hatred toward God? Anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God.†(Jam 4:4 NIV84; see also 1Cor 5:9-13; 2Cor 6:14 etc.) Psalms tells us this, “Psa 1:1 Oh, the joys of those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or stand around with sinners, or join in with mockers. 2 But they delight in the law of the LORD, meditating on it day and night.†(Psa 1:1-2 NLT) Paul warns the Corinthians “Do not be misled: “Bad company corrupts good character.” (1Cor 15:33 NIV84) Let’s be very careful who our close and intimate friends and associates are.
How does this apply to you?
