Scripture
Hos 5:4-6 NLTÂ Your deeds won’t let you return to your God. You are a prostitute through and through, and you do not know the LORD. 5 “The arrogance of Israel testifies against her; Israel and Ephraim will stumble under their load of guilt. Judah, too, will fall with them. 6 When they come with their flocks and herds to offer sacrifices to the LORD, they will not find Him, because He has withdrawn from them.
Observation
This is an extremely sad commentary on the people of Israel who were called to be God’s people and were given a way of access to the One and only true and Almighty God. God even gave them the law by which they could live as the people of God to glorify and honor Him. But they turned away like an adulterous wife (pictured by Hosea’s wife Gomer) and sought after other gods, people and things to satisfy their personal longings and desires. But they would still came to the Lord God with their offerings (see v.6). God did not want their sacrifices, he wanted their hearts, love and loyalty. But because of their willful sin and rejection of the Lord, they were separated from God. “It’s your sins that have cut you off from God. Because of your sins, He has turned away and will not listen anymore.†(Isa 59:2 NLT; see also Pro 15:29; Jer 5:25; Mic 3:4 etc.). But it is not only Israel, but every one of us. “As the Scriptures say, “No one is righteous—not even one. 11 No one is truly wise; no one is seeking God. 12 All have turned away; all have become useless. No one does good, not a single one.”  (Rom 3:10-12 NLT) Paul goes on to say, “For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.†(Rom 3:23 NLT). Is there no answer or solution? Yes, there is. “Then if My people who are called by My name will humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sins and restore their land. (2Chro 7:14 NLT) “The Redeemer will come to Jerusalem to buy back those in Israel who have turned from their sins,” says the LORD.†(Isa 59:20 NLT). Here is God’s promise to us. “But if we confess our sins to Him, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness. 10 If we claim we have not sinned, we are calling God a liar and showing that His word has no place in our hearts.†(1John 1:9-10 NLT).
