Scripture
Hos 9:15, 17 NIV84Â “Because of all their wickedness in Gilgal, I hated them there. Because of their sinful deeds, I will drive them out of my house. I will no longer love them; all their leaders are rebellious. 17 My God will reject them because they have not obeyed him; they will be wanderers among the nations.
Observation
Israel had been chosen by God to be set apart from the nations, to reflect his holiness and glory. God had delighted in choosing Israel (see v. 10) and yet from the very beginning, Israel kept choosing to seek after other gods (golden calf at Mt. Sinai, Baal at Baal Peor etc.) Gilgal was the first place Israel camped in the Promised Land after crossing the Jordan. It was also the place where they had renewed their covenant of circumcision (see Josh 5). And yet it became one of the many idolatrous places in Israel (Hos 4:15; 12:11; Amos 4:4; 5:5 etc.). The result was, “My God will reject the people of Israel because they will not listen or obey.†(NLT). But remember it was Israel who rejected God first, even then God knew this would happen and made a promise to them, “Yet in spite of this, when they are in the land of their enemies, I will not reject them or abhor them so as to destroy them completely, breaking my covenant with them. I am the LORD their God.†(Lev 26:44 NIV84). Israel was finally removed from their Land of Promise and literally scattered among the nations and became “wanderers among the nations.â€Â But just as God remembered his promise and covenant with Abraham and brought back Israel and the Jews from among all the nations (right before our eyes since 1948), so that “All Israel will be saved, as it is written: “The deliverer will come from Zion; he will turn godlessness away from Jacob. 27 And this is my covenant with them when I take away their sins.” (Rom 11:26-27 NIV84). The Lord has promised the same to us and all who call on the name of the Lord. “For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile—the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, 13 for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” (Rom 10:12-13 NIV84).
How does this apply to you (us)?
