Scripture

Rev 5:8 NLT And when He took the scroll, the four living beings and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb. Each one had a harp, and they held gold bowls filled with incense, which are the prayers of God’s people.

Observation

The 24 Elders respond with worship when the Lamb of God takes the scroll which only he was worthy to open the seals. They had harps but also golden bowls of incense.  We are told the meaning of these golden bowls filled with incense; they are the prayers of the saints.  David said, “Let my prayer be counted as incense before you, and the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice!†(Psa 141:2 ESV; see also Rev 8:3-4).  When we pray, our prayers ascend to the Throne of God as incense.  In Rev 8 when an angel stood at the altar of incense in heaven, it says that he was given much incense to offer with the prayers of the saints (God’s people).  No matter how small or insignificant our prayers may seem.  They are amplified and greatly increased with they are offered in heaven.  And God is very pleased by the incense that rises to him when we pray (see Lev 2:2 6:15). One more thing we observe here is the connection between worship and our prayers.  They should be offered together.  We are to come into his presence with thanksgiving and into his courts with praise (see Psa 100:4). But let’s also offer our prayers as incense to God.    As we see in this passage in Revelation 5, all heaven responds to prayer and worship, “And the four living creatures said, “Amen!” and the elders fell down and worshiped.†(Rev 5:14 ESV)
How does this apply to you?
