ヨハネ 1:20,23 （新改訳JSS2017）　ヨハネはためらうことなく告白し、「私はキリストではありません」と明言した。23ヨハネは言った。「私は、預言者イザヤが言った、『主の道をまっすぐにせよ、と荒野で叫ぶ者の声』です。」

みことばを通して、神ご自身がその使者やしもべたちをご自分の時と方法で召し、指示し、整え、遣わされました。多くの場合、人々は彼らを認識せず、認めようとしませんでした。自分たちが期待し、望んでいたようなものではなかったからです。神は必ずしも、私たちが理解し、考えているように働かれません。私たちはいつも、主なる神の視点から物事を見るように心がけなければなりません。当時の宗教指導者たちはヨハネを何者であるかを突き止めようとしました、自分の考えにはめ込もうとしました。イエスも同じでした。多くの方が考えるように、期待していたようには来られませんでしたので、見過ごされました。ヨハネは、彼らが待ち望んでいたメシヤは自分たちの間にすでにおられると言いました。しかし、心と思いを開いて、受け入れなければ見落としてしまうと言いました。神は必ずしも、全てを一度には現わされません。少しずつ、一歩一歩現わすことがあります。「『戒めに戒め、戒めに戒め、規則に規則、規則に規則、ここに少し、あそこに少し。』と」（イザヤ28:10 新改訳）。最初の戒めや規則などを見落とすと、後で全体を見取られないこともあります。私たちが期待していたようでなくても、私たちに見る目と、聞く耳と、理解する心が与えられるように神に祈り求めましょう（申命記29:4; イザヤ6:10； エゼキエル40:4 など参照）。私たちには真理の御霊によって導かれる必要があります（ヨハネ15:26; 16:3 など参照）。

Joh 1:20 ESV  He confessed, and did not deny, but confessed, “I am not the Christ.” 23  He said, “I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’ as the prophet Isaiah said.”

Observation

All through Scripture God himself is the one who called, appointed, prepared and sent his servants and messengers in his time and in his way.  Many times, the people did not recognize them because they did not come the way that they were expecting or understood.  God does not always conform to our way of thinking and understanding but rather we must continually seek to see what he is doing from God’s perspective.  The religious leaders tried to pin down John, but he would not allow them to pigeon-hole him in their own view point.  The same would happen with Jesus.  He did not come or reveal himself the way most people thought he would and so many missed him.  John goes on to say that even though the true Messiah was standing in their midst, they were going to miss him if they did not keep an open heart and open mind. God does not always reveal everything all at once but rather a step at a time. “And the word of the LORD will be to them precept upon precept, precept upon precept, line upon line, line upon line, here a little, there a little.” (Isa 28:13 ESV).  If we miss or reject the first revelation, it can be difficult to see the whole when it is revealed.  Let’s ask God for eyes to see, ears to hear and hearts to understand (see Deut 29:4; Isa 6:10; Eze 40:4 etc.), even if it is not according to the way we expected.  We need the Spirit of Truth to guide us (see John 15:26; 16:3 etc.).
