ヨハネ2:11（新改訳JSS2017）　イエスはこれを最初のしるしとしてガリラヤのカナで行い、ご自分の栄光を現された。それで、弟子たちはイエスを信じた。

奇跡的なしるしはそれだけです。何かを指すしるし、目印です。イエスが行われた奇跡はもちろん、イエスを指して、その正体を指すものでした。長年間待ち望んで期待してきたメシヤの目印でした。このカナの婚礼で行われた水からぶどう酒の奇跡はイエスの働きの最初の公のしるしであったと言っています。これを見られた多くの方（集め始めていた弟子たちを含む）はイエスこそメシアであることを信じました。しかし、同じ奇跡的な印を見ながらも、信じなかった人々もいました（イエスの兄弟たちも含む）（ヨハネ7:3-5; 12:37など参照）。奇跡的な印を見る時に信じるか、信じないかの選択があります。これらの行われた奇跡はイエスの栄光（イエスがだれであるか、その栄養と輝かしいさ）を現し、人々の注目を引き寄せました。この福音書の1章ではヨハネはイエスをこのように紹介しています。「ことばは人となって、私たちの間に住まわれた。私たちはこの方の栄光を見た。父のみもとから来られたひとり子としての栄光である。この方は恵みとまことに満ちておられた」（ヨハネ1:14 JSS2017）。イエスは弟子たちに言いました。「わたしが父のうちにいて、父がわたしのうちにおられると、わたしが言うのを信じなさい。信じられないのなら、わざのゆえに信じなさい。まことに、まことに、あなたがたに言います。わたしを信じる者は、わたしが行うわざを行い、さらに大きなわざを行います。わたしが父のもとに行くからです」（ヨハネ 14:11-12 JSS2017）。そして天に帰られる直前にまた言いました。「信じる人々には次のようなしるしが伴います。すなわち、わたしの名によって悪霊を追い出し、新しいことばで語り、その手で蛇をつかみ、たとえ毒を飲んでも決して害を受けず、病人に手を置けば癒やされます」（マルコ16:17-18 JSS2017）。奇跡の目的はイエスがメシヤ（救い主）であることを指し示す目印となることです。「さらに偉大なわざ（奇跡）」を信じ期待して、多くの人々をイエスに目を向けるようにしましょう。

Joh 2:11 NIV84 This, the first of his miraculous signs, Jesus performed at Cana in Galilee. He thus revealed his glory, and his disciples put their faith in him.

Observation

Miraculous signs are just that, a sign; they point to something. Of course, the miraculous signs that Jesus performed pointed to who he was, the long awaited Messiah.  We are told that this was his first public miraculous sign.  Many people who saw it were amazed and some people believed him on him to be the Messiah, including the disciples he was beginning to call and gather.  But there are others who even though they saw the miraculous signs still do not believe (see John 12:37) , including his brothers (see John 7:3-5).  We have a choice to believe or not believe when we see a miraculous sign.  But Jesus reveals his glory (who he is, the honor and brilliant radiance that attracts the attention of others).  John introduces Jesus in chapter one saying, “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.” (John 1:14 NIV84).  At the last public miraculous sign (the raising of Lazarus), Jesus said, “Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?” (John 11:40 NIV84).  Jesus told his disciples, “Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the miracles themselves. I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.” (John 14:11-12 NIV84)  Then just before he returned to heaven he said, “And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well.”(Mark 16:17-18 NIV84). The purpose of miracles is to be a sign that points to Jesus the Messiah. Let’s believe and expect “greater miracles” to point people to Jesus.
