Joh 8:10-11 ESVÂ Jesus stood up and said to her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” 11 She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on sin no more.”
Observation
This is the famous story of the woman caught in adultery who is brought to Jesus. The Pharisees and Jewish religious leaders were trying to make a point and catch Jesus in a trap. They said, “Teacher, this woman has been caught in the act of adultery. 5 Now in the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. So what do you say?” (v.4-5 ESV) They were partially right about the law, which condemns both the man and the woman who have committed adultery to be stoned to death. But where is the man? Jesus response was, “Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.†(v.7 ESV). Then Jesus let the Spirit of God work on them (see John 16:8-10). When there was no one left who had brought her to Jesus to condemn her, he stood up and said, “Where are your accusers? Didn’t even one of them condemn you?” (NLT). Then he said the most beautiful words she had ever heard, “Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on sin no more.†Why was Jesus able to not condemn her? He was the perfect man without sin, yet his purpose in coming into this world was bring life and salvation, not condemnation and death. “For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.†(John 3:17 ESV). Jesus came not to condemn us in our sins but to atone for sin and restore us to right standing with God, righteousness (see John 1:29; 3:16; 1John 2:2 etc.). This is his grace and mercy to us. His word to us is, “Go and sin no more.â€Â
How does this apply to you?
