Scripture
Joh 9:5-7 NLTÂ But while I am here in the world, I am the light of the world.” 6 Then He spit on the ground, made mud with the saliva, and spread the mud over the blind man’s eyes. 7 He told him, “Go wash yourself in the pool of Siloam” (Siloam means “sent”). So the man went and washed and came back seeing!
Observation
This is an amazing miracle, a man born blind is healed. The disciples tried to assign responsibility for this man’s condition to something he or his parents did. However, Jesus clarified that this was not a cause and effect condition but rather God allowing it to happen so that He could show himself to be the light of the world, even for this man who was born into darkness. This miracle required both Jesus and the man to do something. Jesus made mud and put it on the man’s eyes, but the man was told, “Go wash yourself in the pool of Siloam.â€Â Without the miraculous work of Jesus who wanted to bring light into this man’s darkness, but also without the obedience and cooperation of the man himself to go and wash, there would have been no miracle. Jesus is declared, “I am the light of the world†and sets this man up for his miracle, but he had to go to the pool of Siloam and wash the mud from his eye. Jesus is the I AM, everything we need, but we must do our part by obeying and doing what Jesus tells us to (see Eph 5:10-17).Â
