ヨハネ13:36（リビングバイブルJCB）　さっそく、シモン・ペテロが尋ねました。「主よ。いったいどこへいらっしゃるのですか？」「あなたは、今はついて来ることはできません。しかし、ずっとあとになってついて来ます。」

イエスは弟子たちにこれから起ころうとすることを伝え彼らを整えようとしました。「心から愛してやまない子どもたちよ。ああ、もう時間がありません。あなたがたを残して行かなければならないのです……。その時には、いくらわたしを捜しても、わたしのところへ来ることはできません。ユダヤ人の指導者たちにも言っておいたとおりです」（33節 JCB）。イエスはこれから十字架に行って死ななければならないことを知っていました。以前にも、すでにこのことを明確に伝えていました（マルコ10:33:34； ヨハネ2:19-20など参照）。イエスが行こうとしているところは十字架による死です。ペテロは、自分は必ず後についてともに行くと宣言しました。そして約束しました。「あなたのためなら死ぬ覚悟もできています」（37節 JCB）。しかし、イエスはペテロが3度も拒むことを知っていました。でも、最終的には、いのちを捨てて殉教することも知っていました。だから、「しかし、後にはついて来ます」と言いました。後にペテロを回復し和解させた後に、イエスはもう一度このことを伝えました（ヨハン21:15-19参照）。この後もイエスは弟子たちに言いました。「わたしが行って、あなたがたに場所を用意したら、また来て、あなたがたをわたしのもとに迎えます。わたしがいるところに、あなたがたもいるようにするためです」（ヨハネ14:3 JSS2017）。弟子たちはこのことも質問したときに答えました。「わたしがみちであり、真理であり、いのちです。わたしを通してでなければ、だれも父の身元に行くことはできません」（ヨハネ14:6 JSS2017）。私たちはどこにいるのか、どこへ行っているのか分からないときは、ただイエスの後について行くようにしましょう（詩篇　23:3，6も参照）。

Joh 13:36 TPT Peter interjected, “But, Master, where are you going?” Jesus replied, “Where I am going you won’t be able to follow, but one day you will follow me there.” 

Observation

Jesus is trying to prepare the disciples by telling them what is about to happen.  “My dear friends, I only have a brief time left to be with you. And then you will search and long for me. But I tell you what I told the Jewish leaders: you’ll not be able to come where I am.” (v. 33 TPT).  Jesus knows that he is going to the cross and he will die.  He has told them very plainly in the past (see Mark 10:33-34; John 2:19-20 etc.).  The place Jesus is going is to his death on the cross.  Peter pledges to always follow Jesus and be with him, he even promises, “I will lay down my life for you.”  But Jesus knows what Peter will this time around deny him three times. And yet he also knows that ultimately when the time comes, “but you will follow later,” meaning Peter would also die a martyr’s death.  Jesus reiterates this again after his resurrection when he reconciles Peter once again (see John 21:15-19). Following this Jesus tells the disciples, “I am going there to prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you with me that you also may be where I am.”  When the disciples questioned Jesus about this place, he answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life.  No one comes to the Father except through  me.” (John 14:6 NIV84).  If we don’t know where we are at or where we are going, just make sure you keep following Jesus (see also Psa 23:3,6).
