Scripture

Joh 14:16-18 ESV  And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, 17 even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you. 18 “I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.

Observation

The disciples are probably overwhelmed with all that Jesus is sharing with them and telling them to do; “greater worksâ€, “ask me for anythingâ€, Love me…obey what I command.†How will they ever do all this. Jesus promised that they would not be on their own, they would not be like orphans, but that He would send them the Holy Spirit, whom he said would be a Helper (also translated as Counselor, or Comforter).  Jesus has great things ahead for us but he has not left us on our own but given us the Helper. Through the next several chapters, Jesus references the Holy Spirit and his work among his disciples.  After His resurrection and before his ascension, Jesus told the disciples, “I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.”(Luke 24:49 NIV84) And also, “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you.†(Act 1:8 NIV84).  The Holy Spirit is “another Helper†that is exactly the same in essence and substance as Jesus himself.  The Holy Spirit with us is the same as Jesus with us. Paul says it this way, “If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.†(Rom 8:11 ESV). Let’s welcome the Holy Spirit, our Helper.
How does this apply to you?
