Scripture

Joh 16:19-20 ESV Jesus knew that they wanted to ask him, so he said to them, “Is this what you are asking yourselves, what I meant by saying, ‘A little while and you will not see me, and again a little while and you will see me’? 20 Truly, truly, I say to you, you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn into joy.

Observation

The disciples do not understand what is about to happen.  They do not even understand what Jesus is telling them about what is going to happen.  God almost never tells us or show us everything that is going to happen to us, but he gives us his word and promises that will carry us through.  On the other side the disciples will look back and understand the fuller meaning and the why of what is about to happen.  As we going through life, there are times when we will weep and lament and be sorrowful, but when we hang on to God’s word and promises as we walk through it, we find that our sorrow will turn into joy. This truth is repeated throughout Scripture but especially in the Psalms.  “Weeping may last through the night, but joy comes with the morning. 11 You have turned my mourning into joyful dancing. You have taken away my clothes of mourning and clothed me with joy, 12 that I might sing praises to You and not be silent. O LORD my God, I will give You thanks forever!†(Psa 30:6,11-12; see also Psa. 40:1-3; 97:11; 126:5-6 etc.) Jesus goes on to illustrate what they will experience with a woman giving birth.  It is very painful and distressing to go through the birthing process but when the baby is born “her anguish gives way to joy.â€Â  Some things we may never fully understand on this side of eternity, but we can always trust that God has everything under control and has given us promises to carry us through. Ultimately, “He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. All these things are gone forever.” (Rev 21:4 NLT; see also Isa 35:10; 60:20; 61:3 etc.)
How does this apply to you?
