Scripture
Joh 18:25-27 NLTÂ Meanwhile, as Simon Peter was standing by the fire warming himself, they asked Him again, “You’re not one of His disciples, are you?” He denied it, saying, “No, I am not.” 26 But one of the household slaves of the high priest, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, asked, “Didn’t I see you out there in the olive grove with Jesus?” 27 Again Peter denied it. And immediately a rooster crowed.
Observation
This is one of the greatest heartbreak moments in the Gospels. All of the Gospels record various aspects of Peter’s denial of Jesus. No matter which narrative, it is so very sad and it causes us to shake our heart and ask “Why? What would make a man who not only knew Jesus but was one of his closest disciples to blatantly deny Jesus and try to disassociate himself. Was he frightened? Was he trying to undercover and be available to try to rescue Jesus? It does not really matter what triggered Peter to deny Jesus three times, even after telling Jesus he would not only never deny him but would even die for him (see John 13:38; Matt 26:34; Mark 14:30; Luke 22:34). Then when he realized what he had done it so broke him that he went out and wept bitterly (see Matt 26:74-75; Mark 14:71-72; Luke 22:60-62). Luke records that at that very moment, Jesus turned and looked at Peter (see Luke 22:61). Can you imagine? What remorse and broken-heartedness he suffered for the next three days? Peter is not mentioned again until after the resurrection. Jesus told the women who saw Jesus at the tomb, “Now go and tell His disciples, including Peter, that Jesus is going ahead of you to Galilee. You will see Him there, just as He told you before He died.†(Mark 16:7 NLT). John is also the one who records that Jesus helped Peter work through his repentance and restoration to Jesus (see John 21). Later in his letter Peter tells us, “The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.†(2Pet 3:9 NIV84). Jesus is always waiting and ready to forgive and restore us when we repent and turn back to him.
How does this apply to you?
