ヨハネ18:36-37（新改訳JSS2017）　イエスは答えられた。「わたしの国はこの世のものではありません。もしこの世のものであったら、わたしのしもべたちが、わたしをユダヤ人に渡さないように戦ったでしょう。しかし、事実、わたしの国はこの世のものではありません。」

そこで、ピラトはイエスに言った。「それでは、あなたは王なのか。」イエスは答えられた。「わたしが王であることは、あなたの言うとおりです。わたしは、真理について証しするために生まれ、そのために世に来ました。真理に属する者はみな、わたしの声に聞き従います。」

コメント

ピラトはイエスの本当の正体を全く分かっていませんでした。ユダヤ人の犯行指導者、トラブルメーカーとしか認識しませんでした。しかし、ここで、ピラトは真理であるその方自身と直面しているのです（ヨハネ14:6参照）。イエスは二つのことを宣言しています。まず、確かに、王であるが、この世のものではないこと、この世の国々を超越する神の国の王であること、そしてその王となられるために生まれたことです。さらに、イエスがこの世に来られた目的は真理を示しそれを証しするためでした。そこで、ピラトは有名な質問をしました。「真理とは何なのか？」これは、真理は自分で勝手に決めることができると言っているのです。それに基づきイエスをさばき、死刑に定めました。ご存じのように、これは最終的に彼にとって良い結果にはなりませんでした。私たちは真理に直面したとき、決断が迫られます。真理を認め受け入れるか、真理を退け、真実とは何かを自分勝手に決めていくことです。しかし、だれがどう言うとも、真理は立つのです。パウロは宣言しました。「彼らが滅びるのは、自分を救う真理を愛をもって受け入れなかったからです。それで神は、惑わす力を送られ、彼らは偽りを信じるようになります。それは、真理を信じないで、不義を喜んでいたすべての者が、さばかれるようになるためです」（２テサロニケ 2:10-12 JSS2017）。箴言は私たちにこのように助言しています。「真理を買え。それを売ってはならない。知恵と訓戒と分別も」（箴言 23:23 JSS2017）。

Joh 18:36-37 NIV84  Jesus said, “My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jews. But now my kingdom is from another place.” 37 “You are a king, then!” said Pilate. Jesus answered, “You are right in saying I am a king. In fact, for this reason I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.”

Observation

Pilate is clueless about who Jesus really is.  He only sees him as a troublemaker and Jewish rebel leader.  But this confrontation brings him face to face with the Truth himself (see John 14:6).  Jesus makes two declarations, one is that he is indeed a King but not of this world, in fact his kingdom is above every earthly kingdom.  Jesus acknowledges that he was born a King, but his purpose is to testify to the truth.  Then Pilate asks the famous question, “What is Truth?” implying that there is no standard for truth and truth is whatever one wants it to be.  On this basis he tries and condemns the one who is the Truth.  As we know it did not turn out very well for him.  When we are confronted with the truth, we have a choice.  Acknowledge and believe the truth (no matter how inconvenient), or reject the truth for our own version of what we want to be true.  Truth stands regardless of what people want it to be.  Paul declares, “They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved.  For this reason God sends them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie and so that all will be condemned who have not believed the truth but have delighted in wickedness.” (2Thes 2:10-12 NIV).  Proverbs gives us this advice, “Buy the truth and do not sell it; get wisdom, discipline and understanding.” (Prov 23:23 NIV84)
