ヨハネ 20:27-29（新改訳JSS2017）　それから、トマスに言われた。「あなたの指をここに当てて、わたしの手を見なさい。手を伸ばして、わたしの脇腹に入れなさい。信じない者ではなく、信じる者になりなさい。」 28トマスはイエスに答えた。「私の主、私の神よ。」 29 イエスは彼に言われた。「あなたはわたしを見たから信じたのですか。見ないで信じる人たちは幸いです。」

コメント

トマスはイエスのよみがえりを信じ受けることに葛藤しました（25節参照）。これまでの人生の中でいろいろあって疑いをぬぐい切れなかったかもしれません。しかし、イエスは忍耐を持って、愛を持って、（ユーモアをも用いて）トマスがイエスの死からの復活を信じることができるように導いてくれました。そしてイエスはトマスに言いました。「信じないものではなく、信じるものになりなさい」（JSS2017）（「いつまでも疑っていないで信じなさい」（JCB））。そしてトマスだけではなく、私たちにも促しました、「あなたはわたしを見たから信じたのですか。見ないで信じる人たちは幸いです」（JSS2017）。ここでヨハネはこの福音書を書かれた目的を伝えています。「イエスは弟子たちの前で、ほかにも多くのしるしを行われたが、それらはこの書には書かれていない。これらのことが書かれたのは、イエスが神の子キリストであることを、あなたがたが信じるためであり、また信じて、イエスの名によっていのちを得るためである」（30-31節 JSS2017）。トマスはこの後、最も偉大なキリストの証人の一人となり、その働きと影響が最も遠くまで届いたものとなりました。彼はインドまで行かれて、今日までもインドにキリストの証をもたらされた使徒として知られています。イエスを信頼し、信じるときに、私たちの影響と証がどこまで届くかは知らないかもしれません。

Stop doubting and believe.” 28 Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!” 29 Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

Observation

Thomas was one of the disciples who struggled with accepting and believing the resurrection of Jesus (see v.25).  What made him so skeptical? Possibly things that had happened in his life? But Jesus patiently and lovingly (even humorously) brought Thomas to believe that Jesus was truly risen from the dead. Jesus told him, “Stop doubting and believe.”   Then he challenged not only Thomas but all of us, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”  This is where John tells us the purpose of his writing this Gospel. “Jesus did many other miraculous signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book.  But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.” (v. 30-31 NIV84).  Thomas goes on to become one of the greatest apostles whose ministry reached the farthest away.  He went all the way to India and is today recognized as the one who brought the Gospel to India. When we believe and trust Jesus, we never know how far our influence and testimony will go.
