コメント

イエスは核心に迫りペテロがイエスに仕えるための動機と確信を取り戻せるように助けてあげています。以前にすでに、ペテロに個人的に現れました（ルカ24:34；1コリント15:5などと比較）。この時にイエスがペテロに何を語られたか、どのように扱われたかは記録されていません。イエスとペテロの間の個人的なことです。しかし、この時にはペテロがこれからイエスに従うにあたって、最も真髄となることに触れます。「わたしを愛していますか？」イエスに従うことは義理や功績（パフォーマンス）からではなく、イエスに対する愛が動機とならなければなりません。ペテロは3度イエスを否み、知っていることすら拒みました。ここでイエスは3度「わたしを本当に愛していますか？」と求めています。イエスはペテロをさばいたり、非難したりしないで、ただ、「わたしをこれらのものよりも愛していますか？」と確認をするだけでした。ヨハネは後の手紙で、神を愛し、神の子どもたちを愛することがいかに大切かを語られています（１ヨハネ4:19; 5:1-3なども参照）。イエスがどの戒めが一番大切なのかと聞かれたときにこのように答えました。「あなたは心を尽くし、いのちを尽くし、知性を尽くし、力を尽くして、あなたの神、主を愛しなさい」（マルコ12:30 JSS2017）。あなたはほかの何ものよりもイエスを愛していますか？

Joh 21:15-17 NIV84  When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you truly love me more than these?” “Yes, Lord,” he said, “you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Feed my lambs.” 16 Again Jesus said, “Simon son of John, do you truly love me?” He answered, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Take care of my sheep.” 17 The third time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, “Do you love me?” He said, “Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Feed my sheep.

Observation

Jesus goes straight to the heart and helps Peter regain his confidence and motivation for serving Christ.  Jesus has already appeared personally to Peter before he revealed himself to all of the disciples together (comp. Luke 24:34; 1Cor 15:5). We are not told what Jesus said or how Peter responded. But here Jesus deals with the very heart of what it means to follow Jesus, “Do you truly love me?” Following Jesus is not about duty or performance but rather about the heart that must be motivated by love for Jesus.  Peter had denied Jesus 3 times.  Here Jesus asks Peter 3 times, “Do you truly love me?”  Jesus does not condemn or berate Peter, nor does he bring up the fact that Peter denied him.  He just confirms, “Do you love me more than these?”  John in his letter tells us that loving God and loving his children are the most important things. (see 1John 4:19; 5:1-3).  When Jesus was asked what the most important commandment is, he responded, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.” (Mark 12:30 NIV84).  Do you love Jesus more than anything else?
