Num 1:50 NIV84 Instead, appoint the Levites to be in charge of the tabernacle of the Testimony—over all its furnishings and everything belonging to it. They are to carry the tabernacle and all its furnishings; they are to take care of it and encamp around it.
Observation
The tribe of Levi was set apart from the other tribes of Israel to care for and be in charge of the Tabernacle of Testimony (Tabernacle of Moses). This was the physical place the Lord God designated as the dwelling place of the Presence of God among his people; later represented by the Temple built in Jerusalem. For this purpose the tribe of Levi ordained and responsible for the care and maintenance of the Tabernacle, including its transportation when Israel was in transit. David sang often about this dwelling place of God’s presence. “I was glad when they said to me, “Let us go to the house of the LORD!”… to which the tribes go up, the tribes of the LORD, as was decreed for Israel, to give thanks to the name of the LORD.†(Psa 122:1,4 ESV). Ultimately we see this Tabernacle situated in heaven (see Rev 15:5; 11:19). Where does God place his presence now? In the NT Paul declares, “Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit lives in you?†(1Cor 3:16 NIV84).  Peter tells us, “You also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.†(1Pet 2:5,9 NIV84) In other words, we are the “Levites†choses to care for and maintain the dwelling of presence of God that is our body and also the church, the body of Christ, the Temple of God (see also 1Cor 6:19; Eph 2:21). David’s heart and desire was to dwell in the very presence of God continually. “I love the house where you live, O LORD, the place where your glory dwells.† (Psa 26:8 NIV84; see also Psa 27:4-6; 84:1-2,10; 122:1-4,9 etc.). As we already see in 1Pet 2, we are now the ones called to be not only the temple, but the holy priesthood that guards, cares for and maintains the presence of God. We have been sanctified (set apart) for this very purpose (see 1Cor 6:11,19,20).
How does this apply to you?
