Scripture
Numb 11:4-6 NLT Then the foreign rabble who were traveling with the Israelites began to crave the good things of Egypt. And the people of Israel also began to complain. “Oh, for some meat!” they exclaimed. 5 “We remember the fish we used to eat for free in Egypt. And we had all the cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions, and garlic we wanted. 6 But now our appetites are gone. All we ever see is this manna!”
Observation
The trouble and complaining began among those were of the foreign mixed multitude that followed the Israelites out of Egypt. Most likely they saw the miracles and God’s amazing deliverance of Israel from the tyranny and slavery of Egypt and followed along. These were possibly people of mixed marriage or maybe slaves of other nationalities. But though they had followed the Israelites thus far they probably did not have a true relationship with Yahweh. When things began to get difficult or seemingly monotonous, they began to complain, “We remember the fish we used to eat for free in Egypt. And we had all the cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions and garlic we wanted.â€Â But they forgot the hardships of the slave taskmasters and tyranny under which they had suffered and the Lord had delivered them. Even though these were not the true Israelites, they eventually influenced and corrupted the people of Israel also. As they traveled along to the Promised Land, this same spirit began to infect the other people also and it resulted in severe judgments. Paul uses this as an example for us to not allow complaining and murmuring to corrupt our hearts. “These things happened as a warning to us, so that we would not crave evil things as they did,..11 These things happened to them as examples for us. They were written down to warn us who live at the end of the age.†(1Cor 10:6,11 NLT). We always have a choice. Do we look at and complain about the things that we don’t have, or do we keep our focus on what we do have and be thankful? Complaining focuses on ourselves, thankfulness focuses on God.
