Scripture
Num 12:3 (AMP) Now the man Moses was very meek (gentle, kind, and humble) or above all the men on the face of the earth.
Observation
Moses’ response to the attack on his authority and position, was one of humility. He allowed God to justify and vindicate him. Miriam and Aaron have attacked Moses, most likely because they felt their authority and influence was being diluted by the setting in of the 70 elders and leaders of Israel (first suggested by Moses’ father-in-law Jethro). Their excuse was that Moses’ wife (most likely Zipporah) was not a Jewess but a Cushite (name used to refer to Arabian peninsula where Midianites lived.) This was likely a derogatory reference but not the real issue. They were challenging Moses’ authority and position that God had established. They made the claim that all of God’s people should have equal access and ability to hear from God. Although there is a truth here, we must also remember that God sets up and establishes instruments of his authority among men. We all are equal before God as men and women and children of God, yet, God has established authority and a chain of command for the purpose of order and structure (see Eph 4:11-13; 1Cor 12:27-31; Rom13:1 etc.). Different people have different roles and responsibilities. But here, God makes a further distinction with Moses. Miriam and Aaron challenge that God does not just speak to Moses but to them also as priestly and prophetic ministries. God acknowledges that although he does speak to men in dreams and visions (prophetically), yet with Moses, the Lord says, “With him I speak face to face, clearly and not in riddles; he sees the form of the LORD.†(v.8 NIV84). But the reason the Lord trusted Moses with such power and authority is that he was meek (humble, gentle, kind.) Jesus said in the Beatitudes, “Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.†(Mat 5:5 NIV84; see also Psa 37:11 etc.). Moses trusted that God would justify and vindicate him if he remained humble and submitted to the Lord.Â
