Scripture
Num 12:9 NLT The LORD was very angry with them, and He departed.
Observation
It is a fearful and dangerous thing to make the Lord angry. Miriam and Aaron have spoken against and rebelled against the one that God had graced and set in the place of his authority and leadership. It is not that leadership can never be questioned or held accountable but rather questioning God’s establishment of his authority. Moses was by no means perfect or without fault. God deals with him personally in time. But Miriam and Aaron have assumed that they should be on par with Moses. What they did greatly angered the Lord God and He judged Miriam by causing her to become immediately leprous. Leprosy is a type of sin and just as it eats away at the flesh, so sin eats away and destroys our wholeness of body, soul and spirit. Aaron immediately acknowledges their sin and asks for forgiveness. Also he asks for Moses to pray and intercede to the Lord on their behalf, which he does. He cries out for Miriam, “O God, I bet You, please heal her!†(v. 13). The lepers were to be put outside the camp (on the outskirts). The Lord commands that they put outside the camp for 7 days and then she was healed and restored. This is a picture of what God does for us. Sin must be judged and atoned for. When the leper is brought back in there were cleansing rituals and sacrifices that must be offered (Num 5:2; Lev 14). Sin has separated us from God. “But your iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden his face from you, so that he will not hear.†(Isa 59:2 NIV84). But Jesus came to become our sacrifice Lamb that takes away the sin of the World (see John 1:29,36). Then He has reconciled us and brought us back to himself. “For God was in Christ, reconciling the world to Himself, no longer counting people’s sins against them. And He gave us this wonderful message of reconciliation.†(2Cor 5:19 NLT).
