イエスは猛烈な苦しみと痛みを通られました。むち打ち、いばらの冠、警棒でたたかれ、手足にくぎ打たれ、十字架に張り付けられました。くぎ付けられた足に体重をかけて、体を押し上げて息をしなければなりませんでした。人間の想像を絶する苦しみでした。そして、最後に大きな叫びと共に息を引き取られました。しかし、これは決して終わりではありませんでした。実は、始まりでした。福音書の中で、イエスが死なれた瞬間に神殿の聖所と至聖所を分けられていた垂れ幕が、上から下まで、真っ二つに裂かれました。これは自然的には全く無理なことでした。しかし、天地の全能者なる神がこのことを成し遂げて、御前に自由に近づくことができるようになりました。へブル書で何が起こったのかが説明されています。「こういうわけで、兄弟たち。私たちはイエスの血によって大胆に聖所に入ることができます。イエスはご自分の肉体という垂れ幕を通して、私たちのために、この新しい生ける道を開いてくださいました」（へブル10:19-20 JSS2017）。イエスの身代わりの死によって、私たちが自由に、妨げられないで、神の臨在の中に、恵みの御座の前に進むことができるようになりました。「ですから躊躇せず、神の御座に近づいてあわれみを受け、時にかなって与えられる恵みをいただこうではありませんか」（へブル 4:16 JCB）。

Observation

Jesus went through intense suffering and pain, from the lashings, the crown of thorns, hands and feet nailed to the cross, only able to breath and speak by pushing up on his nailed feet.  Unimaginable human suffering.   And finally he breathed his last and with a great cry gave up his life.  But that was not the end; actually it was just the beginning. The gospels record that at that very same moment, the veil in the Temple between the Holy Place and the Most Holy Place, the throne room of God Presence, was torn in two, from top to bottom. This would have been physically impossible, but the Omnipotent God did it.  And we are told what it means in Hebrews. “Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, 20 by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, his body.” (Heb 10:19-20 NIV84).  He opened the way by his sacrificial death, for us to come freely to the Throne of Grace. “So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive His mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.” (Heb 4:16 NLT).
