民数記 14:11 （新改訳JSS2017）　主はモーセに言われた。「この民はいつまでわたしを侮るのか。わたしがこの民の間で行ったすべてのしるしにもかかわらず、いつまでわたしを信じようとしないのか。

神はこれ以上耐えられません。イスラエルを滅ぼし、モーセから新しい民を始めると宣言しました。主は言いました。「この民はいつまでわたしを侮るのか。わたしがこの民の間で行ったすべてのしるしにもかかわらず、いつまでわたしを信じようとしないのか。」　神と神のことばを信じないとき、私たちは神を侮るのです。侮るとは、軽く見る、ばかにする、軽蔑する、見下げる、あざける、さげすむ、おとしめることです。しかし、モーセは民と神の間に立ち、とりなしました。そして神の性質を思い起こさせました。『主は怒るのに遅く、恵み豊かであり、咎と背きを赦す。しかし、罰すべき者を必ず罰し、父の咎を子に報い、三代、四代に及ぼす』と。この民をエジプトから今に至るまで耐え忍んでくださったように、どうかこの民の咎をあなたの大きな恵みによって赦してください」（18-19節　JSS2017）。神は答えて、あわれみと正義を執行しました。神は言いました。「あなたのことばどおりに、わたしは赦す」（20節）。しかし、続けて宣言しました。「わたしが彼らの父祖たちに誓った地を見ることはない。わたしを侮った者たちは、だれ一人、それを見ることはない」（23節JSS2017）。悔い改める者には必ず神の赦しがあるが、その罪の結果はなくならないこともある。へブル書は教えています。「信仰がなければ、神に喜ばれることはできません。神に近づく者は、神がおられることと、神がご自分を求める者には報いてくださる方であることを、信じなければならないのです」（へブル11:6 JSS2017）。神を侮らないように気をつけましょう。

Num 14:11 NIV84 The LORD said to Moses, “How long will these people treat me with contempt? How long will they refuse to believe in me, in spite of all the miraculous signs I have performed among them?

Observation

God had had enough.  He declares he is done with Israel and will start over again with Moses. The Lord declares, “How long will these people treat me with contempt? How long will they refuse to believe in me, in spite of all the miraculous signs I have performed among them?”  To treat the Lord God with contempt (disdain, despise, make fun of, look down on etc.) by our unbelief is very dangerous and unwise thing to do.  They are putting themselves above the Omniscient, Omnipotent God.  He has  delivered them from Egypt, provided and led them all the way to the promised land and done so many miracles for them, but they still refuse to believe and trust him.  This is what He means by “contempt” or “provoke”.  But Moses intervened and interceded for the people.  Moses declared, “The LORD is slow to anger, abounding in love and forgiving sin and rebellion. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation.’ 19 In accordance with your great love, forgive the sin of these people, just as you have pardoned them from the time they left Egypt until now.” (Num 14:18-19 NIV84).  The Lord’s mercy and justice was served. God declared, “I have forgiven them, as you asked.” （v.20） But then decrees, “Not one of them will ever see the land I promised on oath to their forefathers. No one who has treated me with contempt will ever see it.”  (v. 23 NIV84). There is always forgiveness of sin with God, but there are also consequences which may not be removed.  Let’s be very careful not to treat the Lord our God with contempt, disdain or lightly.  Hebrew tells us, “Without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.” (Heb 11:6 NIV84). Let us take care not to treat God and his word with contempt.
