Scripture
Num 14:44 NIV84 Nevertheless, in their presumption they went up toward the high hill country, though neither Moses nor the ark of the LORD’s covenant moved from the camp.
(Geneva) Yet they presumed obstinately to goe vp…
(MSG) But they went anyway; recklessly and arrogantly…
Observation
The Israelites had refused to believe the promise of God and grumbled and rebelled against Moses and the Lord. As a result the Lord condemned to 40 years in the wilderness until they all died off (the unbelieving generation.) Suddenly then thought the alternative of going into the land was a better idea. But now God was not going up with them, they were on their own. However, they presumed to try it on their own (Geneva – presumed obstinately; MSG – they went anyway; recklessly and arrogantly). Presumption may look like faith, but it is not faith in God and his word, it is faith in yourself and that you can do it even without God. That is dangerous. David prayed, “Keep back Your servant also from presumptuous sins.†(Psa 19:13 NKJV) Without God, we are totally on our own and the results are devastating. “The Amalekites and Canaanites smote the Israelites and beat them back…†(v. 45 AMP). Faith trusts in God and his word, presumption puts trust in self and your own ability. “Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the LORD our God.†(Psa 20:13 NIV84). “This is what the LORD says: “Cursed is the one who trusts in man, who depends on flesh for his strength and whose heart turns away from the LORD.†(Jer 17:5 NIV84). But he who trusts in the Lord will prosper. (see Jer 17:7-8)
