Scripture
Num 15:2-3 NLTÂ “Give the following instructions to the people of Israel. “When you finally settle in the land I am giving you, 3 you will offer special gifts as a pleasing aroma to the LORD. These gifts may take the form of a burnt offering, a sacrifice to fulfill a vow, a voluntary offering, or an offering at any of your annual festivals, and they may be taken from your herds of cattle or your flocks of sheep and goats.
Observation
The Lord God has just banished the first generation of Israelites who left Egypt, from entering the Promised Land (the land I am giving you.) But the Lord is not reneging on His promise to give them the Land, and he is reiterating his covenant with them and reminding them of their sacrificial offerings which they are to bring to reconfirm his covenant with them. It was not just about bringing a sacrifice to the Lord but a meal with which they were to fellowship with the Lord and with one another. He tells them that these offerings were to be “a pleasing aroma to the Lord.â€Â In the NT first of all we know that Jesus offered himself as a sacrificial offering. Paul reminds us that Christ, “loved us and offered Himself as a sacrifice for us, a pleasing aroma to God.†(Eph 5:2 NLT). But he also told us, that our gifts to the Lord and to his ministers, “They are a sweet-smelling sacrifice that is acceptable and pleasing to God.†(Phil 4:18 NLT). And when we honor and please the Lord with our sacrificial giving, “This same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from His glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.†(Phil 4:19 NLT).Â
