Num 15:22 “‘Now if you unintentionally fail to keep any of these commands the LORD gave Moses—
Observation
The Lord God is a holy and just God whose righteousness must not be violated either intentionally or unintentionally. We tend to think that sin is just when we intentionally violate God’s righteousness, but God is very clear that unintentional sins of ignorance are also a violation of his righteous standard and must be atoned for. And both intentional and unintentional sins are exposed by God’s Word. “The Law of the Lord is perfect…By them is your servant warned…†(Psa 19:7,11; see v.7-13). David asked for forgiveness for both intentional and unintentional sins. “Forgive my hidden faults. Keep your servant also from willful sins… (Psa 19:12-13). God made provision for atoning for both through various sacrificial offerings (both sin offerings and Transgression offering.) But it first requires recognition and repentance, whether it was willful and then returning to the Lord, or unintentional and then becoming aware of the sin. Jesus’ atoning sacrifice on the cross deals with all sin both intentional and unintentional. This is what John tells us in his letter, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word has no place in our lives.†(1John 1:9-10 NIV84). When we become aware of our sin and need to repent, we must bring it to the cross of Jesus and let his atoning blood cover and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
