Scripture
Num 16:20-21, 25-26 NLT and the LORD said to Moses and Aaron, 21 “Get away from all these people so that I may instantly destroy them!” 25 So Moses got up and rushed over to the tents of Dathan and Abiram, followed by the elders of Israel. 26 “Quick!” he told the people. “Get away from the tents of these wicked men, and don’t touch anything that belongs to them. If you do, you will be destroyed for their sins.”
Observation
Korah and the other leaders of the rebellion stood against Moses and Aaron and against the Lord God. They had no fear of the Lord. The Lord instructed Moses to tell the people, “Separate yourselves from this assembly so I can put an end to them at once.†(v. 21 NIV84). God’s judgement was about to fall and anything or anyone associated (or close by) would be engulfed also. Moses and Aaron interceded for the whole of the people of Israel. So the Lord again warned the people to move away from the insolent rebels and then declared, “If these men die a natural death and experience only what usually happens to men, then the LORD has not sent me. 30 But if the LORD brings about something totally new, and the earth opens its mouth and swallows them, with everything that belongs to them, and they go down alive into the grave, then you will know that these men have treated the LORD with contempt.” (v. 29-30 NIV84). Suddenly the ground under the rebels opened up and swallowed them, their tents and everything they had. The Lord then sent a fire from the Tabernacle and incinerated the other 250 who had also stood in rebellion (see v.35). Rebellion against God and his leaders is a very serious thing. Even if we are not in full rebellion, if we associate with those who are, we can get wrapped up in God’s judgement against them. That is why even in the NT we are warned, “Therefore come out from them and be separate, says the Lord. Touch no unclean thing, and I will receive you.†(2Cor 6:17 NIV84). “Corrupt people walk a thorny, treacherous road; whoever values life will avoid it.†(Pro 22:5 NLT; see also Pro 4:14-15; 13:20).
