民数記 20:12-13 （新改訳 JSS2017）　しかし、主はモーセとアロンに言われた。「あなたがたはわたしを信頼せず、イスラエルの子らの見ている前でわたしが聖であることを現さなかった。それゆえ、あなたがたはこの集会を、わたしが彼らに与えた地に導き入れることはできない。」13これがメリバの水である。イスラエルの子らが主と争った場所であり、主はご自分が聖であることを彼らのうちに示されたのである。

この時はモーセとアロン、そしてイスラエルの民のための重要な転換期となりました。イスラエルの人々は再び水がないと言って、モーセとアロン（そして主）に対して不平と文句を言いました。なんと、同じ不平のためにさばかれた人々と共に死んだほうがましだったと言い出しました（自分たちも反乱者たちと同感しているのです）。最初はモーセもアロンも正しい、良い反応を示し、民の前に、神の前に、ひれ伏し、顔を地面に伏せました（6節参照）。でも、備えなければならないのは主ではなく、自分たちであると思い始めました。主はモーセとアロンに、「あなたがたは彼らの目の前で岩に命じれば、岩は水を出す」と言いましたが、モーセは岩の前で、「この岩から、われわれがあなたがたのために水を出さなければならないのか」（10節）といいました。焦点は聖なる方、主ではなく、自分たちをあがめました。そして、主が明確に明らかに言われたことに反して、怒りから自分の思いのままに、岩を二度目に打ちました。この岩はキリストを指すひな形であり、私たちのために、その打たれたことにより、「罪と汚れをきよめる一つの泉」（ゼカリヤ 13:1）とされるものでした。しかし、モーセはこのひな型の大切な意味を犯したのです。キリストは一度だけ罪のために打たれなければなりませんでしたが、モーセはこの岩を二度も打ちました。そこで、主はモーセとアロンにさばきを下しました。「あなたがたはわたしを信頼せず、イスラエルの子らの見ている前でわたしが聖であることを現さなかった。」箴言では私たちはいかにして主をあがめるかを教えています。「心を尽くして主に拠り頼め。自分の悟りに頼るな。6あなたの行く道すべてにおいて、主を知れ。主があなたの進む道をまっすぐにされる。7自分を知恵のある者と考えるな。主を恐れ、悪から遠ざかれ。9．．．主をあがめよ．．．」（箴言 3:5-7　JSS2017）。

Num 20:12-13   But the LORD said to Moses and Aaron, ” Because you did not trust in me enough to honor me as holy in the sight of the Israelites, you will not bring this community into the land I give them.” 13 These were the waters of Meribah, where the Israelites quarreled with the LORD and where he showed himself holy among them.

Observation

This is a very pivotal moment in the life of Moses and Aaron and the people of Israel. Israel once again complains and murmurs about not having water to drink and wishing they had died with all the other rebels (they actually identify with the rebels, see v.3).  Although Moses and Aaron’s first response is right (they fell on their faces before the Lord v.6), they set themselves up as Israel’s provider rather than the Lord God.  The Lord told Moses and Aaron, “Speak to that rock before their eyes and it will pour out its water.” (v.8 NIV84).  But in their anger against the people and their rebellion once again, Moses strikes the rock with his staff saying, “Listen, you rebels, must we bring you water out of this rock?” (v.10).  In so doing, they did not honor and lift up the Lord God.  The point is they disobeyed the Lord’s clear and specific command, then in their anger, they made themselves out to be Israel’s provider rather than the Lord himself. Also, the Lord was trying to illustrate a type of Jesus, the Rock (see 1Cor 10:4), which was “struck” once for our redemptions and provided a fountain for cleansing from all sin and uncleanness.  But Moses struck the rock twice.  The Lord judged them, “Because you did not trust in me enough to honor me as holy in the sight of the Israelites.”  Here is how Proverbs tells us to honor the Lord, “Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. 7 Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD, and turn away from evil. 9 Honor the Lord…”
