Scripture
Num 20:14-16 ESVÂ Moses sent messengers from Kadesh to the king of Edom: “Thus says your brother Israel: You know all the hardship that we have met: 15 how our fathers went down to Egypt, and we lived in Egypt a long time. And the Egyptians dealt harshly with us and our fathers. 16 And when we cried to the LORD, he heard our voice and sent an angel and brought us out of Egypt. And here we are in Kadesh, a city on the edge of your territory.
Observation
The Lord is beginning to lead Israel to the point of entering into their promised land, the Land of Canaan. The easiest way for Israel would be to travel through Edom and Moab to the plains of Jericho from which they would begin their conquest of the land. Edom and Moab are related to Israel; Edom is the descendants of Esau, Jacob’s (Israel’s) brother. Moses and Israel ask for permission to pass through their territory (they were not trying to take their land). Israel gives a short testimony of how God has led to this point. Initially they did opposed and refused to let they pass through (see Num 20:21), but ultimately, seems to have allowed them to pass (see Deut 2:28-29). Even though, for the most part Edom opposed Israel and stood against them most of the time, God did have chosen people in even in Edom also. One man (and his family)  many years later was Obed-Edom (see 1Chro 13:14; 15:15-25 etc.). Even though, our families may oppose us, we can tell them of what the Lord has done for us. We never know when and how God will work in our families to bring them (even some of them) to the Lord (compare Amos 9:11-12 with Acts 15:15-17). Tell them of God’s goodness and treat them with respect where at all possible.
How does this apply to you?
