Scripture
Num 21:8-9 NIV84Â The LORD said to Moses, “Make a snake and put it up on a pole; anyone who is bitten can look at it and live.” 9 So Moses made a bronze snake and put it up on a pole. Then when anyone was bitten by a snake and looked at the bronze snake, he lived.
Observation
This is one of the most symbolic passages in Scripture. When Jesus talked with Nicodemus, he used this incident to illustrate why he had come and what he was about to do. The people of Israel had once again murmured and sinned against Moses and the Lord (see v. 4-5).  The Lord sent venomous snakes among them and they died when bitten (see v. 6). The people of Israel repented and asked to be delivered from these snakes and their poison (v. 7). The Lord told Moses to make a serpent of bronze and lift it up on a pole. “Then when anyone was bitten by a snake and looked at the bronze snake, he lived.†(v.9 NIV84). In the Garden, the Serpent “bit†Adam and Eve with the poison of sin and death entered the human race. God’s answer to this poison of sin was to send his own Son who became man and then took on our sin; “God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.†(2Cor 5:21 NIV84). Jesus explained, “Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life.†(John 3:14-15 NIV84). And then he said the most important words in the Bible and the sum of why he came to our world. “For God loved the world so much that He gave His one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life.†(John 3:16 NLT). All we need to do is look to Him and call on his name, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.†(Rom 10:13 NIV84)
