Scripture

Num 22:31-32 AMP  Then the Lord opened Balaam’s eyes, and he saw the Angel of the Lord standing in the way with His sword drawn in His hand; and he bowed his head and fell on his face. 32 And the Angel of the Lord said to him, Why have you struck your donkey these three times? See, I came out to stand against and resist you, for your behavior is willfully obstinate and contrary before Me.

Observation

Balaam knows that the Lord originally told him to not go with the men from Moab.  Now, although the Lord has given him permission to go with them, the Lord had said, “rise up and go with them, but still only what I tell you may you do.†(v. 20 AMP).  Balaam probably rationalized that he had gotten the Lord to change his mind and would probably be able to manipulate what he said and did and still justify it to do what he wanted.  This is what happens when we decide ahead of time what we want to do and try to get God’s permission and approval.  We begin to think God will bless whatever we want to do.  This is dangerous and the Bible calls it perverse (reckless, headlong; willfully obstinate and contrary). The Lord once again warns Balaam, “Go with the men, but you shall speak only what I tell you.†(v.35 AMP).  Throughout the Bible Balaam’s example is used to warn us not to walk in our own wisdom and understanding, and be guided by the desires of our heart. Peter warns us, “This is especially true of those who follow the corrupt desire of the sinful nature and despise authority. Bold and arrogant… 14 With eyes full of adultery, they never stop sinning; they seduce the unstable; they are experts in greed—an accursed brood! 15 They have left the straight way and wandered off to follow the way of Balaam son of Beor, who loved the wages of wickedness.†(2Pet 2:10,14-15 NIV84; see also Jud 1:11).
How does this apply to you?
