民数記 23:8-10 （新改訳JSS2017）　私はどうして呪いをかけられるだろうか。神が呪いをかけない者に。私はどうして責めることができるだろうか。主が責めない者を。9岩山の頂から私はこれを見、丘の上から私はこれを見つめる。見よ、この民はひとり離れて住み、自分を国々と同じだと見なさない。10だれがヤコブのちりを数え、イスラエルの四分の一さえ数えられるだろうか。私が心の直ぐな人たちの死を遂げますように。私の最期が彼らと同じようになりますように。」

主はバラムに明らかに語り示されました、主が語られることばだけを語らなければならない、それからそれて自分勝手なことをしてはならないと厳しく警告しました。バラムはバラクの前で、大々的な祭儀を繰り広げ、パフォーマンスを見せました。裏心では、ここまですれば、神は何とかしてくれるかもしれないとも思ったかもしれません。しかし、バラムは忠実に神のことばを語りました。それはバラクが求めていたものではありませんでした。バラムは今日も有効な真実を語りました。「私はどうして呪いをかけられるだろうか。神が呪いをかけない者に。私はどうして責めることができるだろうか。主が責めない者を。」この民は神がもうすでに祝福されたアブラハムの子孫でした。「わたしは、あなたを祝福する者を祝福し、あなたを呪う者をのろう。地のすべての部族は、あなたによって祝福される」（創世記 12:3 JSS2017）。イスラエルの人々は何が繰り広げられているのかを全く知りませんでした。しかし、主なる神はちゃんと見守ってくださっていました。私たちもキリストを通してアブラハムの子孫とされています（ローマ9:8； ガラテヤ 3:7,13-14など参照）。ゆえに、私たちもこの真理に立つことができます、立たなければなりません。「私たちの主イエス・キリストの父である神がほめたたえられますように。神はキリストにあって、天上にあるすべての霊的祝福をもって私たちを祝福してくださいました」（エペソ1:3 JSS2017）。ペテロはこのように言いました。「私たちの主イエス・キリストの父である神がほめたたえられますように。神は、ご自分の大きなあわれみのゆえに、イエス・キリストが死者の中からよみがえられたことによって、私たちを新しく生まれさせ、生ける望みを持たせてくださいました。4また、朽ちることも、汚れることも、消えて行くこともない資産を受け継ぐようにしてくださいました。これらは、あなたがたのために天に蓄えられています」（1ペテロ 1:3-4 JSS2017）。私たちは神によって祝福された者です。

Num 23:8-10 ESV  How can I curse whom God has not cursed? How can I denounce whom the LORD has not denounced? 9 For from the top of the crags I see him, from the hills I behold him; behold, a people dwelling alone, and not counting itself among the nations! 10 Who can count the dust of Jacob or number the fourth part of Israel? Let me die the death of the upright, and let my end be like his!”

Observations

God made it very clear that Balaam could only speak what He gave him to say, and severely warned him to not try doing anything on his own.  Balaam makes a great show of ritual and offering of much sacrifice to gain “God’s favor”.  But Balaam faithfully only declares the word of the Lord to Balak, and it is not what he wanted or expected. But Balaam declares a truth that is still valid today, “How can I curse whom God has not cursed? How can I denounce whom the Lord has not denounced?” These are the descendants of Abraham to whom God had already promised, “And I will bless those who bless you, And the one who curses you I will curse. And in you all the families of the earth will be blessed.” (Gen 12:3 NASB).  God is watching over Israel even when they have no idea what is going on.  We are also children of Abraham through Christ (see Rom 9:8; Gal 3:7,13-14 etc.) Therefore this is the truth in which we can and must stand. “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places.” (Eph 1:3 ESV).  Peter declares it this way, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you.” (1Pet 1:3-4 ESV).  We are blessed by God.
