民数記 24:6（新改訳JSS2017）　それは、広がる谷のよう、また川のほとりの園のようだ。主が植えたアロエのよう、また水辺の杉の木のようだ。

バラムはイスラエルの民を預言的に祝福し続けながら、バラクは困惑しました。バラムはイスラエイルを園のように表しました。園とは美しさと実り豊かさを生やすところです。創造主が最初にこの世界を造られた時、最初は渾沌とした状態の中から、エデンの園を造られました。多くの木と川と実り豊かさをきわめてパラダイスでした。聖書の最後ももう一つの園で閉じられます（黙示録22:1-5参照）。私たちも、木のように生繁、神の善良を現すものとして示されています。「主のおしえを喜びとし　昼も夜も　そのおしえを口ずさむ人。その人は　流れのほとりに植えられた木。時が来ると実を結び　その葉は枯れず　そのなすことはすべて栄える」（詩篇1:2-3； 104:16も参照）。神から離れて自分に信頼しようとする人生はうまくいきません。「主はこう言われる。「人間に信頼する者はのろわれよ。肉なる者を自分の腕とし、心が主から離れている者は。そのような者は荒れ地の灌木。幸せが訪れても出会うことはなく、焼けついた荒野、住む者のいない塩地に住む」」（エレミヤ 17:5-6 JSS2017）。しかし、わたくしたちの人生を潤し、豊かにする秘訣は神に信頼し、そのいのちの川に自分の根を起こすことです。「主に信頼する者に祝福があるように。その人は主を頼みとする。その人は、水のほとりに植えられた木。流れのほとりに根を伸ばし、暑さが来ても暑さを知らず、葉は茂って、日照りの年にも心配なく、実を結ぶことをやめない」（エレミヤ17:7-8； 詩篇92:12-15も参照）。私たちの選択にかかっています。

Num 24:6 NIV84   “Like valleys they spread out, like gardens beside a river, like aloes planted by the LORD, like cedars beside the waters.

Observation

Balaam continues to prophecy blessing on the people of Israel to Balak’s consternation.  He describes Israel like a garden.  A garden is a place of cultivated beauty and fruitfulness.  The first thing the Lord did when he created the earth which at first was a void and empty world, was to plant the Garden of Eden, a veritable paradise of trees, rivers and fruitfulness. The Bible closes with the picture of another Garden (see Rev 22:1-5).  We are also described as tree which are intended to flourish and show God’s goodness.  “The trees of the LORD are well watered, the cedars of Lebanon that he planted.” (Psa 104:16 NIV84).  Psalms tells us how to be a well watered tree in the Garden of God, “But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night. 3 He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers.” (Psa 1:2-3 NIV84).  Here’s what happens if you try to make your life flourish apart from God and his ways.  “This is what the LORD says: “Cursed is the one who trusts in man, who depends on flesh for his strength and whose heart turns away from the LORD. He will be like a bush in the wastelands; he will not see prosperity when it comes. He will dwell in the parched places of the desert, in a salt land where no one lives.” (Jer 17:5-6 NIV(4).  The secret is to flourishing is to trust in and put your roots deep into God’s river of Life.  “But blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, whose confidence is in him. He will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.” (Jer 17:7-8 NIV84; see also Psa 92:12-15).  It is our choice.
