民数記 25:1-3（新改訳JSS2017）　イスラエルはシティムにとどまっていたが、民はモアブの娘たちと淫らなことをし始めた。2その娘たちが、自分たちの神々のいけにえの食事に民を招くと、民は食し、娘たちの神々を拝んだ。3こうしてイスラエルはバアル・ペオルとくびきをともにした。すると、主の怒りがイスラエルに対して燃え上がった。

又と、悲し悲惨な出来事が起きました。前の数章では、バラクとモアブ人たちが、占いと呪いをもってイスラエルを滅ぼそうとしました。しかし、神はバラムが呪うことがではなく、祝福を語らせました。その後で、バラムはバラクの好意を得るため、多額な報いを得るために、バラクに勧めて、モアブ人の女たちを利用して、イスラエルの人々を性的不道徳と偶像礼拝に誘い込み、悲惨な結果をもたらしました（民数記 31:16 参照）。特にイスラエルの部族長たちの中からこの誘惑に陥れられてものも多かった。性的不道徳は神が定められた男と女の間の結婚関係を直撃するものです。また、偶像礼拝は主なる神に対する不道徳、姦淫とみなされます。私たちは主なる神のみを礼拝し、仕えるべきお方です。この二つの罪、不道徳と偶像礼拝はもっとも根本的な罪であり、迷わせる恐ろしいものです。旧約においても、新約においてもこれらは厳しく禁じられていて、さばかれる罪であります。パウロはこの事件も取り上げて私たちに警告しています。「あなたがたは、彼らのうちのある人たちのように、偶像礼拝者になってはいけません。聖書には「民は、座っては食べたり飲んだりし、立ってはたわむれた」と書いてあります。また私たちは、彼らのうちのある人たちがしたように、みだらなことを行うことのないようにしましょう。彼らはそれをして一日に二万三千人が倒れて死にました」（1コリント10:7-8 JSS2017）。新約を通してもくりかえし警告されています。「あなたがたは知らないのですか。正しくない者は神の国を相続できません。思い違いをしてはいけません。みだらな行いをする者、偶像を拝む者、姦淫をする者、男娼となる者、男色をする者、盗む者、貪欲な者、酒におぼれる者、そしる者、奪い取る者はみな、神の国を相続することができません」（1コリント６:9-10 JSS2017; ２ペテロ２:１５； 黙示録 2:14なども参照）。これらの生活習慣は世の中の人々には見られても不思議ではないが、私たちはそれらのものから、救い出され、解放され、きよめられたものとされた者です。「あなたがたのうちのある人たちは、以前はそのような者でした。しかし、主イエス・キリストの御名と私たちの神の御霊によって、あなたがたは洗われ、聖なる者とされ、義と認められたのです」（１コリント６:11 JSS2017）。肉体的にも、霊的にも不道徳を避けるようにと警告を受けましょう。

Num 25:1-3 ESV  While Israel lived in Shittim, the people began to whore with the daughters of Moab. 2 These invited the people to the sacrifices of their gods, and the people ate and bowed down to their gods. 3 So Israel yoked himself to Baal of Peor. And the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel.

Observation

This is another sad and terrible incident that happened to Israel.  In the previous chapter Balak and the Moabites try to destroy the Israelites through sorcery and curses, but God turns Balaam’s intended curses into blessings.  However, evidently to try to regain Balak’s favor and gain great reward of wealth, Balaam gives advice to Balak of how to bring disastrous consequences on Israel by causing them to sin by idolatry and sexual immorality (see Num 31:16). The women of Moab invite and seduce the Israelite men (especially many of the leaders of the tribes, see v.4).  Sexual immorality (of any kind) is a direct attack on God’s design for marriage between a man and a woman. And idolatry is spiritual adultery against the Lord God whom only we are to worship and serve. These sins are two of the most basic and insidious of any sins. They are condemned and judged severely in both the OT and the NT.  Paul uses this example of the OT to warn NT believers. “Do not be idolaters as some of them were; as it is written, “The people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to play.” We must not indulge in sexual immorality as some of them did, and twenty-three thousand fell in a single day.”  (1Cor 10:7-8 ESV).  The NT writers repeatedly warn us.  “Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.” (1Cor 6:9-10 ESV; see also Rev 2:14; 2Pet 2:15 etc.).  These lifestyles are to be expected among the people of this world, but we have been delivered, cleansed and justified of these sins, “And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.” (1Cor 6:11 ESV). Let’s beware of immorality whether physical or spiritual.
