Scripture

Num 26:1-2 ESV After the plague, the LORD said to Moses and to Eleazar the son of Aaron, the priest, 2 “Take a census of all the congregation of the people of Israel, from twenty years old and upward, by their fathers’ houses, all in Israel who are able to go to war.”

Observation

The first generation that came out of Egypt had the opportunity to go into the Promised Land but refused to because of unbelief and rebellion against the Lord (see Num 14:26-35). In this final plague which resulted because of many of them totally rejecting the Lord God by their immorality and idolatry, the Lord wipes out the last of the old generation and they now are counting the new generation that will go into possess the Promised Land.  Some interesting observations.  There is very little variation between the first and second census, which means that though they did not grow during the 40 years of wandering, overall they did not lose many numbers.  God was faithful to watch over them and keep them.  “It was not because you were more in number than any other people that the LORD set his love on you and chose you, for you were the fewest of all peoples, 8  but it is because the LORD loves you and is keeping the oath that he swore to your fathers, that the LORD has brought you out with a mighty hand and redeemed you from the house of slavery, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt. 9 Know therefore that the LORD your God is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations.†(Deut 7:7-9 ESV). Another observation is that the census was to count, “…all in Israel who are able to go to war.â€Â  Even though the Lord has promised to give Israel their inheritance, they must fight for it and take it for themselves.  In summarizing the list of the heroes of faith, it says, “Who through faith conquered kingdoms, enforced justice, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions, 34 quenched the power of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, were made strong out of weakness, became mighty in war, put foreign armies to flight.†(Heb 11:33-34 ESV).  And Paul challenges us, “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.†(Eph 6:10-12 ESV).
How does this apply to you?
