詩篇　78:9-12（リビングバイブルJCB）　エフライムの人々は、十分に武装していたにもかかわらず、いざ戦いとなると敵に背を向けて逃げ出しました。10神のおきてを守らず、神の命令に従うのを拒んだからです。11-12先祖たちが、エジプトであれほど助けていただき、すばらしい奇跡を見せていただいたのに、神を忘れてしまったのです。

エフライムはイスラエルの一部族でしたが、旧約聖書の中で、たびたび、イスラエル全体を指してつかわれる名前です。神がイスラエイルのためになされた様々な御業、エジプトから導き出されたこと、荒野を通して導かれたこと、マナ、ウズラ、水などを備え、彼らの敵を打ち負かすなどを現されたのに、忘れたのです。また、彼らは戦いのために武装されていました。彼らは戦うなら神は勝利を与えてくださったのですが、恐れのため、不信仰のゆえに、背を向けて戦いから逃げ出したのです。神の契約とそのおきてを守らず、神がなされたことを忘れたのです。ペテロは教えています。「私たちをご自身の栄光と栄誉によって召してくださった神を、私たちが知ったことにより、主イエスの、神としての御力は、いのちと敬虔をもたらすすべてのものを、私たちに与えました。4その栄光と栄誉を通して、尊く大いなる約束が私たちに与えられています。それは、その約束によってあなたがたが、欲望がもたらすこの世の腐敗を免れ、神のご性質にあずかる者となるためです」（2ペテロ 1:3-4 JSS2017）。私たちを全てにおいて勝利者としてくださり、勝利をすでに与えられているのです（ローマ8:37参照）。パウロも私たちに戦いの姿勢を教えてくださっています。「終わりに言います。主にあって、その大能の力によって強められなさい。11悪魔の策略に対して堅く立つことができるように、神のすべての武具を身に着けなさい。．．．13ですから、邪悪な日に際して対抗できるように、また、一切を成し遂げて堅く立つことができるように、神のすべての武具を取りなさい。14そして、堅く立ちなさい．．．。」（エペソ6:10-11、13-14 JSS2017）。いつも覚えておきましょう。「神が私たちの味方であるなら、だれが私たちに敵対できるでしょう」（ローマ8:31 JSS2017; 申命記 20:4; 1コリント 15:57 も参照）。

Psa 78:9-11 NLT  The warriors of Ephraim, though armed with bows, turned their backs and fled on the day of battle. 10 They did not keep God’s covenant and refused to live by His instructions. 11 They forgot what He had done—the great wonders He had shown them.

Observation

It seems that the reference to Ephraim is representative of the people of Israel (used throughout the OT).  In spite of all that God has done for them in bringing them out of Egypt and leading them through the wilderness, providing manna, quail, water and defeating all their enemies, they forgot it all.  They were also equipped for battle, meaning all they had to do was fight and God would give them the victory, yet fear and their unbelief caused them to turn their backs and flee on the day of battle.  They refused to keep God’s covenant and to live by His instructions.  They forgot what He had done for them.  Peter tells us, “By His divine power, God has given us everything we need for living a godly life. We have received all of this by coming to know Him, the One who called us to Himself by means of His marvelous glory and excellence. 4 And because of His glory and excellence, He has given us great and precious promises. These are the promises that enable you to share His divine nature and escape the world’s corruption caused by human desires.” (2Pet 1:3-4 NLT).  He has promised to, and already made us overwhelming victors in everything (see Rom 8:37).  Paul instructs us how to fight in victory. “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes…13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then…” (Eph 6:10-11, 13-14 NIV84).  Remember, “If God is for us, who can be against us?” (Rom 8:31 NIV84; also see Deut 20:4; 1Cor 15:57).
