Scripture
Psa 78:52-55 NLTÂ But He led His own people like a flock of sheep, guiding them safely through the wilderness. 53 He kept them safe so they were not afraid; but the sea covered their enemies. 54 He brought them to the border of His holy land, to this land of hills He had won for them. 55 He drove out the nations before them; He gave them their inheritance by lot. He settled the tribes of Israel into their homes.
Observation
Throughout Scripture God is pictured as a Shepherd that leads, guards and provides for His sheep (His people). Psalms 23 of course comes to mind, “The LORD is my shepherd; I have all that I need.†(Psa 23:1 NLT; but also Psa 79:13; 80:1; Isa 40:11; John 10:11,14; Heb 13:20 etc.). This is such a beautiful picture of how the Lord relates to us and cares for us. It also needs to be reciprocal. But in this Psalm (78) it shows how Israel forgot that the Lord was their shepherd or refused to follow after him and the dire consequences of that choice. Let’s remember, The Lord is my shepherd, He will not only lead us to the place of our inheritance, but also guide and protect us along the way. And ultimately, “For the Lamb on the throne will be their Shepherd. He will lead them to springs of life-giving water. And God will wipe every tear from their eyes.” (Rev 7:17 NLT)
